Spurs entertained Liverpool at Stevenage on a cool evening as they sought to build on their last match which they won away at Norwich 3-2. The visitors lost their last game 1-0 at Sunderland on Sunday. Former Spurs academy coach Alex Inglethorpe is not in charge of them this season as they have struggled with only one win in five. They still produced a large crowd on the night to see them despite Liverpool TV showing the game.
Spurs lined up with Glover in goal behind Veljkovic and Carter-Vickers with Walker-Peters at right back and Amos on the left. Lesniak and Stylianides were in front of them with Walkes behind Harrison up front with Bennetts on the right flank and Georgiou on the left.
The game started at a fast pace with both sides seeking to get forward. Spurs had the first chance when Georgiou crossed for Harrison to volley wide. Liverpool won a corner which saw Masterson win another at the near post. From that corner Spurs cleared to Hart who mis-kicked, allowing Bennetts to get the ball and run from his own half to the edge of the visitors' area. Hart tried to pull him back as he crossed the halfway line but he kept going and played in Walkes on the right to fire low into the corner of the net for the lead.
Bennetts was giving Hart a torrid time down the right and left him for dead when he picked up an over-hit cross from the left near the corner flag coming back inside but his effort was blocked. He was unmarked when another cross from the left found him but his attempted volley came out to Walkes who hit it over the bar.
A free kick was deflected into the path of Madgar Gomes who saw his effort saved for a corner. Toni Gomes saw his strike turned away for a corner as Liverpool pushed for an equaliser. Bennetts got away again but Fulton saved his effort and the wide man crossed minutes later for Georgiou to also draw a save. So much of Spurs good work was down the flanks and Georgiou whipped in another low cross that went unpunished.
From a corner Veljkovic headed wide as Spurs failed to increase their lead and were punished for it. When Spurs half-cleared a corner it came out to Virtue to the left and he fired it back into the near side of the goal from about twenty yards. Bennetts got down the right and whipped in a cross that went to Georgiou on the far side who returned it across the goalmouth without anyone making contact.
Liverpool reorganised for the second half pushing Hart forward as he was having a better time against Walker-Peters in the first half with Whenlan crossing over to tackle Bennetts. Virtue was given the job of marking Georgiou. This had some early success as Hart fired wide.
Harrison drew a save from Fulton who appeared to tip over an effort from Walkes but a goal kick followed. Georgiou got down the left and fired across the goal just wide of the far post. Amos fired wide from a cleared corner just before Liverpool made a double change. Marsh almost made a perfect start when he got his head to Dhanda's cross but Glover saved.
Amos played in Walkes who fired over before Spurs made their first change with Goddard coming on for Stylianides as an attacking midfielder with Walkes dropping deeper. Dhanda was beginning to get the better of Amos down the right and his cross was met by Gomes in the six yard box with Glover making a great reaction save at the expense of a corner.
Goddard sent Georgiou clear on the left but Fulton saved at his near post for a corner. Bennetts turned Brewitt in the centre circle who then grabbed hold of him pulling him back which saw the referee issue the first booking of the match. Amos fired wide before Bennetts was taken off for a well earned rest being replaced by Loft with Harrison moving to the right.
With the game finely poised, Liverpool won a free kick just outside the area in the Dee. Dhanda put his kick over the bar. Liverpool looked the stronger team now and Gomes got down the left to cross for Alves in the area. Glover produced another good save with Marsh prodding the rebound wide. Polgar who had taken over at right back was booked for a foul on Georgiou as the winger got past him. Carter-Vickers drew a save from a corner with a far post header as Spurs looked for a late winner. Loft got free on the left but he hit his effort wide of the far post as the game finished level.
In the first half Spurs wide players caused the visitors all sorts of problems - Georgiou with his pace and Bennetts with his dribbling. Liverpool closed them down better in the second half which allowed Dhanda to get down his flank and cause problems for the Spurs defence. Spurs should have been home and dry before the second half started but they were not able to finish the chances created and allowed the visitors to leave with a point. Liverpool's second half performance nearly made it three points.
Spurs' development side will be playing Chelsea next week at Aldershot. Last season the game finished as a 0-0 draw. They will then meet FC Schalke in the Premier League International Cup at Stevenage on the 3rd November.
