Spurs travelled to Norwich on a showery Thursday evening seeking to add to their last match which was the amazing 7-4 victory over Leicester City last month. Norwich themselves were hoping to follow up their Premier League International Cup win over Villereal. As the game was again being shown live on BT Sport, Norwich allowed free admittance and were rewarded with another big gate. I hope they get proper recompense from the TV company. Last season Norwich had a comfortable 3-1 win.
As both clubs met at U-18 level on Saturday with Spurs running out 3-0 winners it was interesting to see some of those players appearing on the team-sheet for this match. Norwich did not include any over-age players as they did last season having promoted five players from Saturday. Spurs also included five players from Saturday including the scorer of the three goals, Ryan Loft who made his first start for the U-21's as well as Keanan Bennetts. Spurs lined up with Glover in goal behind Maghoma and Veljkovic with Walker-Peters at right back and Amos on the left. Lesniak sat in front of them with Walkes while Harrison flanked by Bennetts on the right and Georgiou on his left supported Loft up front.
Spurs defended the North end in the first half in an end to end game with Spurs moving the ball through the midfield and the "Canaries" playing longer balls. Bennetts was having another good game on the right and he got inside when his shot was blocked for a corner. Lesniak met Walkes' corner to strike a volley which Bennetts deflected into the net. It looked like Filip had scored as the players congratulated him but TV replays showed that Keanan got the final touch to score on his debut.
Walker-Peters made a run through the right channel firing wide. Glover saved from Ashley-Seal with Maghoma conceding a corner clearing the rebound. Norwich won another corner from Coker's header from which they equalised when the other centre back, Norman, headed in. A quick kick up field by Killip almost caught out the Spurs defence with Glover kicking out Veljkovic's back pass straight to Eaton-Collins who fired wide.
Walker-Peters made one of his twisting runs down the right and whipped in a low cross that Killip deflected away from the onrushing Spurs players. When Spurs lost the ball when it hit the ref, Veljkovic blocked the effort from Eaton-Collins for a corner. Norman headed this one wide.
Harrison played in Georgiou who hit a powerful shot into the side netting. Amos made a strong run from the back, and his drive was deflected for a corner. The last chance of the half fell to Lesniak who hit a dipping effort from 20 yards which was just over the crossbar.
There were no changes for the start of the second half which continued as the first finished. Ramsey won a corner when his effort was deflected wide by Ashley-Seal. Killip had an easy save from a header by Maghoma while Glover saved from Eaton-Collins. Amos fired wide before Walker-Peters' forward pass to Lesniak was played into Harrison who had to get the ball out of his feet sending it wide.
Norman headed over from a free kick before Spurs regained the lead. Lesniak won the ball in the middle of the pitch and played the perfect through ball into the path of Loft's run so that the striker only had to steer it pass the advancing keeper to score his first goal for the U-21's. Loft was taken off just after and replaced by Stylianides who went into midfield allowing Harrison to move up front.
Glover saved from Middleton who had a second chance from the rebound which was blocked for a corner. Bennetts saw his effort go for a corner and Georgiou also won a corner when he met a free kick. Veljkovic saw his low drive cleared off the line by Ramsey before Norwich equalised for a second time. The home side worked their way down the right before Middleton put in a cross which was converted by Eaton-Collins at the far post.
Spurs responded well with Georgiou firing over before going in front again. Having worked the ball down the left Stylianides looked up and saw Walkes unmarked in the area and played it into him. The midfielder hit it first time with his left into the left corner of the net. Spurs made changes replacing first Georgiou with Goddard and then taking off Bennetts for Duncan to make his first appearance at this level. Harrison drew a save in the dying minutes before just failing to meet a cross by Goddard in added time.
This was a good entertaining game which for those of you who watched it on the TV should encourage you to come and watch them live. Both sides played their part with a good all round performance. The Spurs debutants did well especially Bennetts who is still only 16. Loft was well marshalled by the City defence but he took his chance well which is what you ask from your striker. Ryan has now scored four goals in a week. We also saw a good performance from another defensive midfielder in Lesniak (were you watching Mauricio).
The next game for the development squad will be next week when Liverpool are the visitors to Stevenage on Friday evening. I hope to be back from Brussels for that one.
