Spurs travelled to Hetton-le-hole to play Sunderland who had won one and lost one while Spurs arrived with a win and a draw from their two. The game was held in hot sunny weather with a strong breeze across the pitch. Last season Spurs lost here 2-1. That was a game in which Spurs began poorly but got stronger as the game went on, losing to a late goal.
Spurs lined up with McGee behind Veljkovic and Carter-Vickers with Walker-Peters at right back and Walkes on the left. Winks and Lesniak protected the back four with Pritchard ahead of them with Sonupe on the right flank and Onomah on the left in support of Harrison up front.
Spurs kicked off the first half attacking the South end but found that the home side defended strongly. Spurs were almost caught out when Stryjek launched a ball over the top of the back line and Mavrias got across Carter-Vickers to win a free kick. The referee was quick to book the Spurs defender for what was his first tackle.
McGee saved the free kick from Gomez for a corner. A minute later Spurs failed to clear a cross. Gooch was driven wide but came back to drill the ball under McGee to put the home side in front.
Walker-Peters was booked for a tackle from behind as he followed Buckley into the left corner. From the free kick Buckley fired wide at the far post. Spurs won a free kick when Onomah was fouled from behind but Pritchard hit the ball over. Winks played a one-two to get into the area but was blocked by Beadling as he struck his shot. Pritchard played a good diagonal ball to Walkes who laid it off for Onomah but his effort was blocked.
Agnew fired over from outside the area before Mavrias had to go off when he slid into the hoardings, gashing his forearm badly. Sonupe beat the offside trap to receive a forward pass from Winks but the keeper was out quickly to block. Agnew fired wide as the half ended.
Spurs made a change for the second half replacing Walkes with Georgiou to provide width on the left as Onomah tended to drift inside most of the time. Greenwood, operating on the left, was giving Walker-Peters a hard time as he was on a yellow. Greenwood got down the left early in the half, crossing for Mandron to hit a rising effort which McGee pushed onto the crossbar.
Pritchard won a free kick when he was taken out to the right of the area. Stryjek got across to tip Pritchard's kick around the far post for a corner. Spurs made their second change replacing Sonupe with Goddard who went into midfield. Lesniak moved to left back, allowing Georgiou to move forward and provide the width.
Thomas Robson got down the left and crossed for Mandron to head over. Onomah ran onto Harrison's flicked header but his effort was deflected for a corner. Maghoma came on for Carter-Vickers at the back with the captain's armband going to Winks. Sunderland began to drop off as they sought to kill off the game. This policy was demonstrated by them leaving three players back on a corner that was fired wide by Mandron.
Both Spurs' centre backs were able to carry the ball to help put pressure on the home side but the Spurs midfield continued to try and pass their way through a packed defence. Mandron shot wide from another cross. Smith tried to win a free kick against Veljkovic but was booked for diving by the referee. Sunderland were playing with nine men behind the ball and Gooch was booked for pulling back Georgiou when he cut inside but they held out to the final whistle.
This was not a great performance from Spurs as they showed little variation from trying to pass their way through the opposition. As they pushed forward late in the game they let themselves down with poor passing when they needed to keep possession allowing the home side to run the clock down.
The U-21's next game will be in the Premier League International Cup when they play Everton at Goodison Park on the 31st August. Everton came back from 3-1 down to draw with Liverpool in midweek. Spurs beat the "Toffees" at Hotspur Way on the opening day of the season 4-1 but lost to Everton 3-1 on the last day of last season at Goodison when a very young Spurs side lost to a counter-attacking display by the home side.
