Can Sonny repeat Berbatov's treatment against his old club?

It is almost 10 years since we travelled to Germany to meet Bayer Leverkusen in their Bay Arena Stadium. On 23rd November, 2006 Spurs beat Leverkusen 1-0 thanks to a goal by their former star Dimitar Berbatov, who was signed by Spurs in the summer of 2006. Since then the stadium has been upgraded with a second tier, giving additional seats and a new oval roof. I don't know if they still have the overhead grills which were a feature in the old stadium! I well remember the atmosphere in the away section during this game when we literally bounced up and down singing "Martin Jol's Blue & White Army" ad infinitum!

This time, Spurs have another former Bayer Leverkusen star in their squad in the shape of top scorer Son Heung-min. The question is - will Son also score against his old club for a touch of deja vu? Son was held on the bench on Saturday at West Brom, and I am sure he will start tomorrow night's game. Let's hope for another example of "score against the old team" syndrome!

Bernatov and Son are not the only two players who have featured for both these sides. The other is Croatian defender Vedran Corluka, who spent some time on loan with the German club in the 2011-12 season, before his transfer from Tottenham to Locomotiv Moscow, where he still plays.

When the two clubs met in 2006, it was in the penultimate year of the UEFA Cup competition, in which five clubs were put into groups and played each other only once, either at home or away. The otnher clubs in our group that year were Dinamo Bucuresti, Besiktas, and Club Brugge. It was an unsatisfactory version of the competition where three of the five teams qualified for the knock-out phase. Spurs topped their group with a 100% record. Leverkusen finished third with only four points. Both clubs reached the quarter-finals, and were knocked out at that stage. Spurs lost narrowly to Sevilla, whilst the German side were well beaten by another Spanish club - Osasuna. It was a good year for Spain as our manager's old club Espanyol reached the final, losing to Sevilla. Mauricio Pochettino was at that time enjoying a break between his playing career and his managerial career which started with Espanyol.

Leverkusen qualified for this year's Champions League by finishing third in The Bundesliga. They were 28 points behind Bayern Munich and 18 points behind Borussia Dortmund, who so convincingly beat us last season. Currently Bayer Leverkusen sit 10th in the league after Saturday's 2-1 defeat away to Werder Bremen - another team we have played at this level. Although our opponents are mid-table, seven points behind the leaders, they are clearly to be respected as before the International break they beat Dortmund 2-0 at home with goals by Mehmedi and Hernandez.

Javier Hernandez is the former Manchester United striker, and is enjoying a rich vein of form in The Bundesliga. So far this season he has scored 7 goals in all competitions, and last season he scored 17 goals in 28 league games. (Three substitute appearances).

We are certain, of course, that Toby Alderweireld has to sit this one out, and probably for a few weeks to come. However, Eric Dier seems sure to stand in beside Jan Vertonghen. Danny Rose was rested on Saturday and is a sure starter. Whether or not Kyle Walker, or Kieran Trippier start tomorrow remains to be seen. I suspect it will be Trippier. Mousa Dembele proved his fitness when coming off the bench at West Brom, so Mauricio Pochettino will have a strong team despite the enforced absences of two star players - Kane and Alderweireld.

Two of Kevin Wimmer's International colleagues were unused subs on Saturday, due to knocks on International duty, but one must assume they will be fit for this game. The two players are defender Aleksander Dragovic (who played and scored against us for Basel in 2013 in The Europa League quarter-final), and midfielder Julian Baumgartinger. Leverkusen will also be missing 22 year old Ukrainian midfielder Vladlen Yurchenko and German striker Karim Bellerabi, who are both injured.

Bayer Leverkusen were last beaten at home in European competition by Monaco almost two years ago. Their record in 8 home games since is won 4, drawn 4. This year they drew 1-1 in Monaco. Hernandez had given them a 74th m inute lead which was snatched away by Kamil Glik in virtually the last kick of the game. Leverkusen have surrendered winning positions in both their Group E games, and will be quite desperate to win here tomorrow.

As for Spurs, an away draw would be a good result, but I have a feeling they will succeed in a stadium where the home team will surely not be forming a defensive dome as seen at The Hawthorns on Saturday. I'll go for a 2-1 win, with Son to score!

Please note, that as I am travelling to Germany, my report will not be online until Wednesday evening, but I will seek to publish the post-match survey asap after the game.

Match referee Cuneyt Cakir and his team are from Turkey. With the exception of the fourth official, all officiated in our last trip to Germany for the 3-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund in March. Mr. Cakir was not much appreciated, especially because he missed a clear penalty shout for Spurs. Let's hope tomorrow's result is a dramatic improvement!

· Reviewing Spurs' last Champions League Season - 2010-11. On October 20th 6 years ago, Gareth Bale scored a dramatic hat-trick in The San Siro against Inter. The match ended 4-3 to Inter, but gave us great hope for the return match at White Hart Lane!
