Can Spurs' youngsters maintain our recent Cup record at Anfield?
When the draw was made for this round of the EFL Cup, three plum matches were disclosed. They were West Ham v Chelsea; the Manchester Derby and this game. Spurs' manager Mauricio Pochettino indicated a while ago he would put his faith in the youngsters who played so well in our 5-0 win over Gillingham. The exact team for tonight's game may differ in one or two respects, but the big question will remain - Can our young players emulate their recent predecessors in Cup matches against Liverpool?
Spurs have a good recent Cup record against Liverpool, having won three of the last four such games, losing the other game only on penalties. Our last three Cup meetings have been in the League Cup.
The tales of our last four Cup meetings with Liverpool can be found on this website through the links above. The most famous of these was the 2-1 away win in the FA Cup in March 1995, when Teddy Sheringham and Jurgen Klinsmann famously scored at a place that was traditionally held to be a virtually inpenetrable fortress for Spurs teams on the road. Until Garth Crooks secured for us a 1-0 league win in March 1985, we had to endure those "Spurs have not won at Anfield since the sinking of the Titanic" headlines.
Indeed, since that 1995 FA Cup quarter-final, we have only won twice at Anfield, and one of those was the November 1998 League Cup win. The match came a little over a month after the appointment of George Graham as Spurs' manager, and the Spurs side included former Liverpool defender John Scales, who scored his only Spurs goal against his former team! Steffen Iversen and Allan Nielsen scored Spurs' other goals in a 3-1 win, with Michael Owen on target for the home side in front of a moderate 20,772 crowd. Spurs went on to win the 1999 Worthington Cup Final.
Our next Cup meeting against Liverpool was not a successful one for Spurs. The game was a fifth round tie in December 2004. Liverpool fielded what was essentially a reserve side, but held us to 0-0 after 90 minutes, and 1-1 after extra time. We lost the penalty shoot-out 4-3. (Spurs v Liverpool, 01.12.04.
A better result came for Spurs in November 2008, soon after another managerial appointment - that of Harry Redknapp. Arguably Redknapp's first official win had also been against Liverpool (he had a watching brief in our first win against Bolton), when we won a home Premier League game 2-1 with a last minute goal by substitute Roman Pavlyuchenko. Harry's coaching prowess had been to the fore when he said he just told Pavlyuchenko to "f***ing run about a bit". "Super Pav" was also a two goal hero in a 4-2 League Cup win for Spurs in another fourth round win. Popular loanee Fraizer Campbell scored our other two goals. Pavlyuchenko (now 34) is still playing in Russia, currently for Ural. Campbell (now 29) is on the books at Crystal Palace, but has managed just one substitute appearance so far this season. Spurs were League Cup holders and again went on to reach the final, but lost on penalties to Manchester United.
Both teams have fine League Cup histories. Liverpool were losing finalists (penalties to Man City) last season, and have won the trophy no less than 8 times, being runners-up another four times. One of those wins was of course against Spurs in 1982. Spurs have lifted the various versions of the League Cup 4 times, and have also been runners-up four times.
Both managers have stated they will play their number two goalkeepers. Michel Vorm starts for Spurs, whilst Mignolet is between the sticks for the home side. Pochettino is likely to maintain his faith in the same back line which played so well in our 5-0 win over Gillingham (Trippier, Carter-Vickers, Wimmer and Davies). if "Poch" wants to stick to his current 4-1-4-1 style we could see Eric Dier offering strength in front of the back four, with perhaps a midfield four of Onomah, Carroll, Dembele and Nkoudou, with Janssen up front. If the "second string" team plays as well as they did in the Gillingham game they might surprise Liverpool, who I understand will also field some younger players. those hoping to see Marcus Edwards will be disappointed as he is out with an injury suffered on the Leverkusen trip.
I do expect "The Reds" to field the stronger side, and a win will be a big ask for Spurs, but despite my pessimism after Saturday's game, I fancy us to snatch a win!
We have a team of Premier League officials for this game, and in charge will be Jonathan Moss who we haven't seen since our home defeat late last season to Southampton. I remember Mr Moss was in charge of our 4-0 League Cup win at Villa Park three years ago, when Jan Vertonghen escaped punishment for pulling down the pants of an opponent. The Spurs side included "rookie" Harry Kane, who of course is not yet fit to play after his injury last month.
The Spurs Odyssey match report will be posted early tomorrow morning, but look out for the usual post-match survey soon after midnight.
