Are Liverpool fragile? Yes!
Liverpool have had a tough start to the season with three consecutive away games. (Four including their midweek EFL Cup game at Burton) It is not a case of the fixtures computer breaking down, or being harsh on "The Reds", but Liverpool made a request not to play at home in this time frame to allow for the completion of work on the new tier in their main stand. Last week's opponents, Burnley, agreed to the change, which meant that three of their first four Premier League games are at home. Burnley will pay for this change later in the season, when they are scheduled to play four consecutive away games, including their return match at Anfield.
It is the fixtures computer that has led to both Liverpool clubs, and both North London clubs meeting within the first three weeks of the season. On the first week-end, when we were drawing 1-1 at Goodison Park, Jurgen Klopp's men were dramatically winnning 4-3 at The Emirates. The "Reds" went 4-1 up in the 63rd minute. Arsenal fans were in despair, but the home side did come back to make it a one goal difference. As the scoreline indicates, both defences were suspect, with Liverpool's Alberto Moreno coming in for considerable criticism. Our near neighbours are at Watford this week - not Goodison Park.
Liverpool's Europa League Final against Sevilla in May was an all or nothing quest. Victory would have given them a Champions League place, but their heart-breaking 3-1 defeat means they face a season without European football altogether. Not so long ago, it was Liverpool who were the Champions League side, but now the situation has been reversed. Spurs have finished above Liverpool in six of the last seven seasons. Spurs loanee centre-back Federico Fazio was an unused sub in that Europa League Final (getting a winners' medal). This week, he did not feature in Roma's Champions League home defeat to Porto, but maybe he will get Europa League game time again.
The lack of European football meant that Liverpool had to take part in this week's EFL Cup second round, but they came through that with a strong team, and with flying colours, beating Championship side Burton 5-0. The Liverpool team was Mignolet; Clyne, Matip, Lovren, Milner; Lallana (sub Wijnaldum, 64), Can (sub Stewart, 71), Henderson (Capt.); Mané, Origi, Firmino (sub Sturridge, 64). Klopp had made just four changes from the side which had lost at Burnley last Saturday. Those were Matip for Klavan (both summer signings); Can for Wijnaldum; Origi for Sturridge, and Mane for Coutinho.
Despite the lack of European football, like Chelsea, Liverpool have still been able to invest in re-inforcements for their squad. High profile signings for Klopp include Sadio Mane from Southampton and Georginio Wijnaldum, also for a sizeable fee, from Newcastle. A surprise signing was 39 year old goalkeeper (former Arsenal player) Alex Manninger. Manninger got a one year contract, and was no doubt signed as a third choice keeper behind Mignolet and another goalkeeper signing Loris Karius. Unfortunately for Liverpool, Karius suffered a serious hand fracture in a pre-season game, which leaves Mignolet as first choice, and probably Manninger on the bench. Former Spurs Academy keeper Lawrence Vigouroux has been sold to Swindon, where he spent last season on loan. Another former Spurs Academy man, Kevin Stewart, made a substitute appearance on Tuesday night. Stewart, approaching his 23rd birthday next month, made several cup appearances for Jurgen Klopp last season, and then played 90 minutes in each of Liverpool's last six Premier League games. So far this season, Stewart has only come off the bench.
Klopp has also signed defenders Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip from German clubs, whilst Skrtel has gone to Fenerbahce. Wales' Euro 2016 midfield hero Joe Allen has been signed by Stoke, who we visit after the forthcoming International break.
Clearly, Klopp has a wealth of talent at his disposal, but so far this season, his defence has been fragile against Premier League opposition. Moreno was dropped last week, but Liverpool still got caught out twice by promoted Burnley, despite dominating possession over the course of the game by a margin of 80% to 20%. I can't recall a team losing with such a high proportion of the possession. James Milner, who retired himself from England International football just before the start of the season, has stepped in to cover for Moreno's frailty.
Last season's corresponding game was Jurgen Klopp's first in charge of Liverpool, who had been drawing too many games under Brendan Rodgers' leadership. Klopp didn't change things, as we drew 0-0. Our away match was also drawn.
Once again Spurs have to go into battle without the suspended Mousa Dembele, who has one more game (Stoke) to sit out. Hugo Lloris will also be missing, but after his showing last Saturday, I have confidence in Michel Vorm. Mane missed last week's Liverpool game at Burnley, but should be back, and Klopp will have the likes of Countinho and Firmino at his disposal. Both these players are capable of producing a moment of magic that can win an game. Emre Can is doubtful with an ankle injury.
A good game is in prospect, and it kicks off at 12.30 for Sky viewers. I am hoping that home advantage will be telling for Spurs, who I think will win 2-1.
Tomorrow's match referee will be Bobby Madley, who is still relatively new to the Premier League scene. We have only seen this referee four times before. The last occasion was our home FA Cup draw against Leicester in January.
