Back to The Riverside!
We last met Middlesbrough on a Wednesday night in March 2009 at White Hart Lane when we won 4-0. Robbie Keane scored his first goal after his return to Spurs, having been signed back from Liverpool by Harry Redknapp. Roman Pavlyuchenko and Aaron Lennon (2) scored the remaining goals. This was the only time in his senior career that Lennon scored two goals in a game.
This had been the season which we started with the famous "two points from eight games", when Harry Redknapp took charge. When we met Middlesbrough, we were still fighting relegation and only two points ahead of "Boro", who ultimately got relegated with 32 points. Our win followed a Carling Cup Final defeat (on penalties) to Man Utd the previous Sunday, and started a run of 7 Premier League games with only one defeat which took us into the top half of the table and safety. We even had an outside chance of Qualifying for Europe in the end!
Spurs and Middlesbrough shared one distinction in that season. They were the only two teams to beat Rafa Benitez's Liverpool in the Premier League. Why, Harry even led us to two wins over the team which ultimately finished runners-up in the Premier League for the second of three occasions! Our other win had been on our way to The Carling cup Final.
My preview for our last Middlesbrough meeting includes gruesome details of some of the ignominious defeats we have had in our 28 previous Premier League matches against the team from The Riverside.
It wasn't one of the most horrible defeats, but our last meeting at The Riverside was ironic because former Spur Mido scored what turned out to be the clinching goal in a 2-1 defeat. This was a game in which Gomes, Modric, Bentley and Giovani made their Spurs debuts, and Dimitar Berbatov made his one (substitute) appearance of the season before disappearing to Old Trafford at the end of the month.
It seems like Middlesbrough have been away from the top flight for longer than 7 seasons, but they thoroughly earned their automatic promotion for finishing second in the Championship last season. The Teesiders had looked like taking the Championship title with a run of 6 consecutive wins but they drew their last four games, including one at their rivals Burnley, who snatched the title with three consecutive wins in their final games.
Although Aitor Karana's side signed renowned goalscorer (at least in lower levels) Jordan Rhodes from Blackburn in January, there was no stand-out scorer for Middlesbrough last season with league goals provided by David Nugent (8), Stuani (7), Ramirez (7), Rhodes (6), and Adomah (6). Adomah has now been sold to Aston Villa and Rhodes has yet to start a game this season. Ramirez and Stuani are both Uruguayans. Stuani was signed from Espanyol last year. Ramirez had been a Southampton player, and was a loan player for "Borough" last season. Stuani has scored two of Middlesbrough's five league goals so far this season.
Former Man City striker Alvaro Negredo was signed in the summer from Valencia to offer goal power. He scored against Stoke and made the challenge upon Everton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg that led to the opening goal in their game at Goodison Park last week. Negredo is now 31.
Success has brough back the crowds to Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium with over 30,000 attending both their home Premier league games to date. Those home fans have yet to see a win this season, and will be clamouring for a result against one of the Premier League's big sides. Travelling fans should note that their viewing position has been moved from behind the goal to the East Stand.
The Middlesbrough squad includes full back Fabio Da Silva, once of Manchester United, but signed from Cardiff. Da Silva played only 10 minutes of "Boro"'s league cup tie against Fulham (which they lost), and is out for a few weeks yet with a knee injury. Middlesbrough stalwart (and club captain) Grant Leadbitter has been absent due to a hernia op, and will not play until December. "Boro" have Arsenal's Calum Chambers on loan, and he is apparently "itching" for game time. Central defender Bernardo Espinosa was signed in January, but suffered an ACL injury. He appeared for the Middlesbrough U-23s in The Football League trophy, and in the words of the manager is ready to make his first team debut. Espinosa is a Colombian, and was signed from Spanish club Sporting Gujon.
As for Spurs, I have yet to see any team news, but we know Harry Kane is out, which gives Vincent Janssen a chance to make it a "starry, starry" Saturday afternoon. Christian Eriksen played 60 minutes on Wednesday night (and was your man of the match), and is likely to return, whilst Mauricio Pochettino hopes to be able to make 9 full changes from the team which so convincingly beat Gillingham. Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier should have recovered from their cramp issues last week, and Danny Rose may also be fit enough to return. I am taking Spurs to win this one 2-0.
Match referee Graham Scott is our second new referee in 4 days. Mr Scott has refereed few Premier League games, and has not taken charge at this level since February. He was in charge of the EFL Cup game on Tuesday night when Derby were beaten at home by Liverpool. Mr Scott was subject to criticism when he took over at the last minute from Andre Marriner for the game between Swansea and Sunderland last January, when he was reported to have missed two offside goals; awarded a dubious penalty, and incorrectly sent off Kyle Naughton. Otherwise, he seemed to do okay!
· Reviewing Spurs' last Champions League Season - 2010-11. On 25th September, 2010, Spurs lost 1-0 at Upton Park. It was West Ham's first win over Spurs since "lasagne-gate".
