Stoke will be awkward
The fact that in their last two meetings at The Britannia/bet365 Stadium have ended in fantastic 4-0 victories for Spurs does not make this Premier League fixture a nailed-on home win. Spurs' away record in our Premier league meetings with Stoke is much better than at home, having won twice as many games on our travels as we have at White Hart Lane. Last season, we squandered a 2-0 lead and drew, and the year before we lost 1-0. That 1-0 defeat in November 2014 had me calling for Pochettino's head at one point during the game. I grew and have worn a beard since that particular defeat vowing not to shave before a) we won a home league game; b) won at Stamford Bridge, and c) won the league. Well, alright, I confess those stipulations were alternatives, and of course we have since won a home game, but I like the beard and it has stayed. I'd still like to see the other two events though!
Mark Hughes' side will be coming to The Lane refreshed after two weeks without competitive football, during which the "Potters" enjoyed a refreshing warm weather training trip to Dubai. Hughes will also be able to select Swiss International Xherdan Shaqiri, who had a calf strain towards the end of January. Other injured players ssuch as Jon Walters and Geoff Cameron are close to return, but not likely to be ready for this game. Walters' absence since early January has been one reason why Peter Crouch has had more game time so far this year. "Crouchie" has taken full advantage and scored 4 Premier League goals since late December, taking his Premier League tally to 100, making him the 26th player to reach this figure. Other than Crouch, Wayne Rooney, Jermain Defoe and Sergio Aguero are the only active players who have also scored 100 or more Premier League goals. Harry Kane is already on 63 at the age of 23, 13 years younger than Crouch, it won't be long before Harry emulates, then goes ahead of Crouch's tally.
Hughes has other ongoing injury issues, with goalkeeper Jack Butland out till mid-April with his severe ankle injury, sustained on International duty in March last year. Midfielder Stephan Ireland has also not played this season, as he suffered a broken leg.
Stoke had a horrible start to the season which included our 4-0 away win in September, and were at the wrong end of the table until mid-November. They currently sit in 9th place, five points behind West Brom, with whom the club has had something of a spat over the disclosure of the full circumstances of Saido Berahino's prolonged absence from "The Baggies" side before his January move to Stoke. Stoke are having a short season, lasting only two games in the EFL Cup, and leaving the FA Cup at the first hurdle and at home to Wolves. Their fans have had little to cheer, but they and their team will be seeking to make tomorrow's game as awkward as possible for Spurs.
Hughes and his squad know that they find Spurs at a vulnerable moment, after a disappointing Europa League exit, and in a mini-spell in which they have lost two of their last four games. Pochettino fielded a full strength side at Wembley, and will want to field much the same line-up tomorrow. Energy levels must surely be sapping after the effort required for so much of the game by only 10 men on the field. At least Dele Alli will be fresh! Bearing in mind the energy expended by Kyle Walker on Thursday night, there must be a case for Kieran Trippier to start this game, although, if fully fit, Walker would always be my first choice.
By exiting the Europa League, Spurs have eased their potential fixture list by a total of 7 potential games, allowing more focus on the 13 remaining Premier League matches and the quest for a top four place at the very least. They also have their next three league games at home, now that the visit to Selhurst Park has to be re-scheduled due to our FA Cup quarter-final, which is also at home! As tough as an opponent as Stoke can be, Spurs know that nothing less than victory tomorrow would be satisfactory, especially to the fans who are fearing that their hopes of silverware are fading before their eyes.
Spurs can re-claim second place with a win, as Man City have to sit it out this week-end, whilst Man Utd and Southampton play in the EFL Cup Final later tomorrow afternoon. That game also means Arsenal will be having a day off. Spurs still have the hope of glory, whilst all Stoke can do is be a nuisance. It will be difficult, but I will take Spurs to win 2-0.
Match referee Jon Moss has looked after us twice so far this season. Those games were firstly the EFL Cup defeat at Anfield in October and then our 5-0 home win over Swansea in December. Stoke haven't seen this referee for over a year.
Did you know? - Whilst we have never played Stoke on this date, we did meet at The Victoria Ground on Saturday February 27th 1982, when we won 2-0, with Garth Crooks scoring both goals against his old team. At the time Spurs were still involved in four competitions, but ultimately had to setlle for victory in the FA Cup against QPR.
