We really ought to beat these!
After the rigours of a tough November in which we played three London Derbies, and lost both our Champions League games, we welcome a team to White Hart Lane tomorrow who we really ought to beat. We all know it won't be that easy though. Both teams have managed just one win in their last six Premier League games. Swansea's win came last Saturday in a crazy 5-4 win over fellow strugglers Crystal Palace.
The "Swans" had been 3-1 up until the 82nd minute of last week's game before a Cork own goal, and a Benteke touch had reversed the scoreline giving Palace a 4-3 lead until the final minutes of the game during which Fernando Llorente picked a most excellent time to score only his second and third goals for his new club, for whom he signed in the summer.
Llorente who is now 31 was a member of the Athletic Bilbao side which visited The Lane in August 2011 for a friendly, which was won by Spurs. (Spurs 2 Atheletic Bilbao 1 - 06.08.2011). Llorente was a prolofic scorer for Bilbao, and some observers fancied him as a Spurs player, but after ending his Bilbao career (85 La Liga goals in 262 games), he moved on to Juventus, then Sevilla. Llorente had a good first season with Juventus, but has faded since. Clearly Swansea are hoping for more goals from him in the remainder of this season, which has been a struggle for them so far.
The absence of goal power has been an issue for Swansea since Manchester City paid big money for their former star Wilfried Bony. Bony never got much exposure at City and he is currently on loan at Stoke, and has not made his mark there. One of Bony's successors - Bafetimbi Gomis - was not prolific for "The Swans", but ironically, he is scoring well for Marseille where he is currently on loan. Last season's top scorer Andre Ayew went to West Ham in the summer.
Swansea's second highest league goals' scorer last season was former Spurs man Gylfi Sigurdsson. "Siggy" scored 11 league goals last year, and has 4 (5 including a League Cup goal) so far this term. Last week Swansea manager Bob Bradley fielded three ex-Spurs in his starting line-up, with Kyle Naughton, Wayne Routledge and Sigurdsson all involved in the Palace game. Both Naughton and Routledge were substituted. The latter made way for late hero Llorente.
Swansea are in their sixth successive Premier League season, and Bradley recently replaced Francesco Guidolin, who had ony taken Garry Monk's place in January. Stability is very much required for the South Wales club, who hold a place deep in the affections of our own Cliff Jones, who no doubt will be on hospitality duty tomorrow with split loyalties.
That 5-4 win last week was Swansea's first league win since the opening day of the season which was a 1-0 at Burnley. Some of their better results have also been against London teams, drawing 2-2 at home to Chelsea, before Antonio Conte's revival took root, and pushing Arsenal to a 3-2 result at The Emirates. Apart from Son Heung-min's International team-mate Ki Sung-yong, "The Swans" have no injury problems reported.
Spurs are having Toby Alderweireld assessed today (Friday) ahead of the game, but then Mauricio Pochettino has to make a decision about whether he plays tomorrow and/or next Wednesday for our last Champions League game. Danny Rose will return from suspension, but the absence of Erik Lamela and former Swansea full-back Ben Davies goes on.
If Spurs can find the form in which they started the game against Chelsea, I wouldn't anticipate too much trouble against a struggling team like Swansea. I'll go for a 3-1 home win.
Did you know? - Ben Davies was not the first Spurs player with the surname Davies to have also played for Swansea. It is not surprising that there was another Davies, but there is just one other and that was right winger Willie Davies, who played for Swansea (Town not City) between 1921 and 1924. After spells at both Cardiff and Notts County, Willie Davies moved to Spurs, making his debut in February 1930 against Oldham. In all, Willie Davies played 115 games for Spurs between 1930 and 1933. He only played in Division Two (6 times in the FA Cup), moving back to Swansea when we were promoted. Davies scored 19 goals in his Spurs career - all in the league. Ironically, the first of these came against Swansea Town in a 3-0 win for Spurs. The last came against Stoke in January 1933. Willie Davies was born in 1900 and died in 1953.
Willie Davies was the first Swansea player to move directly to Spurs. Michel Vorm and Ben Davies have recently joined a fairly exclusive club of players coming to Spurs directly from Swansea. It's a club which includes the third and fourth such players - Terry Medwin and Cliff Jones!
This will be match referee Jon Moss's second game in charge of Spurs this season. His previous match was our EFL Cup defeat at Anfield in October. Mr Moss hit the headlines last week when he sent Man Utd manager Jose Mourinho to the stand in the Premier League game against West Ham at Old Trafford. We haven't won a game with Mr Moss in charge since we beat Everton at Goodison Park on the last day of the 2014-15 season! It is time for that record to change!
