Major opportunity for Spurs

There is a major opportunity for Spurs in this early kick-off game on Saturday. With Liverpool playing at Old Trafford on Sunday, a win would take Spurs into second place in The Premier League for the first time this season. With Chelsea playing one of their more difficult away games at Leicester, a win could even give Spurs the opportunity to draw closer to the league leaders. A win would mean it would not matter what Man City do at Everton, or what Arsenal do at Swansea, but of course it would be nice if they could lose points too.

The trouble is that our opponents are Tony Pulis's West Bromwich Albion and like any Pulis side this one has the ability and indeed tendency to be an obstinate opponent. Pulis was appointed at West Brom two years ago, and they lost 3-0 at home to Spurs in a January 2015 fixture, but the last three meetings have been 1-1 draws.

Last year's home game came at a moment when Spurs were on the crest of a wave after marvellous performances and wins over Manchester United and Stoke City, leading to a belief that we might just catch League leaders Leicester. The 1-1 draw was the first of four major disappointments, and in fact our dreams were ended even before playing our last two games. "Baggies"' centre-back Craig Dawson had a hand in both goals, putting Spurs in the lead with his first half own goal, but equalising in the 73rd minute. That was the last time Dawson found the net at either end.

In our away game this season it was former Spur Nacer Chadli who put his new team one up with 8 minutes remaining, but Dele Alli came to Spurs' rescue with an 89th minute equaliser. That was Dele's last Premier League goal before his recent magical run of 7 goals in four games.

Spurs will no doubt be the bookies' favourites to win at home, but the fact it is West Brom visiting surely offers some intriguing possibilities for punters. If you fancy your chances you can use this bet365 promo code to bet on this game, or indeed many other events.

When he scored that goal against us, Nacer Chadli was on a bit of a roll with West Brom, as the goal was his fourth in four league games. Nacer's form even got him a game (as playing substitute) for his National side, Belgium, albeit against Gibraltar, after a spell when he had been falling out of favour with his country. He hasn't scored for his club since that Spurs game, and hasn't always been a starter either.

When we played at The Hawthorns, West Brom were ninth in the table. They dipped after a couple of defeats, but are genuinely in the hunt for a Europa League qualification standing securely in 8th place at this time. One statistic that might interest punters is the fact they haven't drawn a game in their last 7 league matches. Mind you, it's 10 games since Spurs last drew as well!

One-time Spurs target Saido Berahino (still only 23) was recently sent to France for a "conditioning camp", but he hasn't played since September, and would appear to be the only definite absentee from Pulis's squad tomorrow. Jonny Evans has had a calf strain, and the latest news is that he will not be available. Chris Brunt suffered a knock against Hull recently and remains a slight doubt.

Rondon has been West Brom's top scorer so far with 7 league goals, but he hasn't scored since a hat-trick against Swansea last month. James McLean (5) and defender Gareth McAuley (4) have been the next biggest scorers along with Chadli.

West Brom were beaten at home by Championship side Derby in last week's FA Cup Third Round. Pulis played a strong side, but the statistics suggest it was a bit of a freak result, as West Brom had most possession and far more shots on goal. They will be formidable opponents as always.

Spurs, of course, are on top of their game after 6 successive wins in all competitions. Confidence in the squad is on a high following that 2-0 win over title favourites Chelsea, and two consecutive 4-1 away wins. Moreover, virtually all of the first team were rested from last Sunday's FA Cup win. Even Harry Kane and his partner managed to time the birth of their first child to co-incide with his rest against Villa!

The only known definite absentee for Spurs now is Erik Lamela, who has been given permission to go to his former club Roma (with a Spurs medic) for more rehabilitation. We haven't seen Erik in action now since October, and it will be great to have him back as soon as possible. However, after several games in which we decried his enforced absence, I suspect many Spurs fans are getting used to his absence. Clearly the team is also coping, but come back soon Erik!

Despite all my written caution regarding this game, I do feel confident that Spurs will win this game, but I don't think it will be at all easy, and we may have to wait for the all-important breakthrough. I'll go for a 2-0 and second place until at last 5.50pm on Sunday, and hopefully beyond!

Our matchday referee for only the second time this season will be Anthony Taylor. His last game with Spurs was the magnificent 4-0 away win against Stoke in September. Mr. Taylor is kept very busy these days, and taken charge of 8 games since the beginning of December, including a Champions League game between Juventus and Dinamo Zagreb. He also had charge of the Man City defeat at home to Chelsea in which he sent off two City players in added time (Aguero and Fernandinho). Mr Taylor also showed red to Stoke's Arnautovic in their game at home to Southampton, also in December.
