"We want you to stay" anyone?

In my Matchday 9 Premier League review today I wrote ...."that three of last year's bottom four at this stage were relegated. Everton, Stoke, West Ham and Swansea are all on 8 points with Leicester just above them on 9. Already this season three managers of those bottom seven clubs have been sacked. Slaven Bilic, whose West Ham come to Wembley tomorrow night for a Carabao Cup game should be worried." Perhaps Spurs fans will offer him a rendition previously offered to Arsene Wenger - "We want you to stay"!

In truth, despite their apalling 3-0 home defeat last Friday night against Chris Hughton's Brighton, and poor league form which includes a home defeat to Spurs when we went 3-0 up, West Ham and their 4,800 fans will travel to Wembley in high spirits and with high hopes. Why? Because they know the last time these two teams met in Cup competition (and it was the League Cup) it was "The Hammers" who left White Hart Lane victorious.

That game followed a disastrous 5-0 home defeat by Liverpool, and the resulting departure of Andre Vilas-Boas, with Tim Sherwood installed as (temporary) team coach. Emmanuel Adebayor, who hadn't made a start under Vilas-Boas that season, was re-installed by Sherwood into a side captained by Kyle Walker. Adebayor put us into a 67th minute lead, but Spurs were undone by late goals by Jarvis and Maiga.

Sam Allardyce was in charge of "The Hammers" then, as he was for their only previous appearance at the new Wembley Stadium when they won the 2012 Play-Off Final against Blackpool. The Official West Ham site lists the other occasions when the East London team did visit the old National Stadium, but even without the benefit of this season's home programme, Spurs out-number their visits hands down.

West Ham fans will also draw encouragement and have happy memories of the fact they beat us three times in that 2013-14 season.

Now Spurs face West Ham in a league cup game again after a home game against Liverpool, but this time full of confidence after a sensational 4-1 win. "The Hammers" - perhaps with Bilic still in charge - face 'Pool themselves at The London Stadium on November 4th.

No doubt there will be changes to both teams. Spurs have a title-chasing challenge at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime, and West Ham travel to Selhurst Park for a six-pointer at the other end of the table.

As far as Spurs are concerned several clues have been laid out regarding Mauricio Pochettino's team selection. Michel Vorm is on the programme cover, and will surely cover for Hugo Lloris. Eric Dier has captained the side before on these occasions and was rested on Sunday, only coming off the bench after 81 minutes. Ben Davies, Danny Rose and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou were all unused on the bench and may also take part, although Mauricio expresses caution as to whether Danny could start this one. Son and Dele could be fresh enough to start this one, but Harry Kane will surely be rested with Fernando Llorente getting only his third start of the season. Both Mousa Dembele and Erik Lamela have returned to training, but apparently Lamela is still "not ready" play his first game for a full calendar year (to the day!).

The final team is very much a guessing game, but we might see Vorm; Walker-Peters, Foyth, Alderweireld/Vertonghen, Davies; Dier, Dembele; Son, Dele/Sissoko, Nkoudou; Llorente. The manager has plenty of options. He will want to deal with the potential threat of Andy Carroll who got a rest last Friday due to suspension, and who is always a handful when he does appear. The West Ham team is a similar guessing game, but whoever plays will be up for it, as will their fans. Their only major injury doubt is last season's top scorer Michail Antonio.

The upper level of the stadium is not open, and tickets have still been available, so those present have a task to lift the atmosphere and lift the team. I fancy Spurs to win by two goals, either 2-0 or 3-1. The game is live on SKY TV, kicking off at 8pm, and has to be decided on the night with extra-time anad penalties, if required.

The match referee will be Mike Dean, aged 49, and the most experienced of all the Premier League refs. Mr Dean looked after our home draw against Swansea, and for once was not liked by Spurs Odyssey voters, although historically he has usually been favourable for us.
