Spurs travelled to the home of Dagenham and Redbridge to face West Ham United in a game brought forward from Monday evening. Spurs drew their last game with Liverpool 1-1 at Stevenage while the "Hammers" had a 5-1 win at Manchester City. Spurs lost earlier in the season 3-1 to West Ham at Stevenage. Last season Spurs were held to a 2-2 draw having led twice at Dagenham.
Spurs lined up with Austin behind Marsh and Tanganga with Hinds at right back and Eyoma on the left. Bowden anchored the midfield with Roles alongside him and Duncan wide on the right and Georgiou on the left in support of Sterling and Janssen up front.
Spurs defended the East end in the first half which saw the home side make a strong start with Austin having to make a save in the first minute. Johnson crossed for Powell to power in a header which the Spurs stopper held. Austin saved low to his left from Hector-Ingram for a corner. Lewis fired wide before Spurs' first chance saw Anang save from Sterling who had his follow up effort blocked.
The pace of Hector-Ingram was causing the Spurs defence problems and Tanganga was booked for catching him in the area to concede a penalty. Powell scored from the spot to Austin's left. Sterling was also causing problems at the other end which saw Alese booked for a foul on him. Eyoma played a forward pass to Sterling to get into the area where he played in Janssen for an easy finish at the far post.
Eyoma was booked for a foul in the middle of the park before Spurs got a penalty of their own when Coventry caught Sterling in the area as he shaped to shoot having been played in by Georgiou. Anang saved Sterling's kick going to his left. West Ham finished the half strongly with Kemp firing over and Austin saving from Hector-Ingram. Austin got down to save a low drive by Lewis which went up and over the crossbar for a corner.
West Ham made one change for the start of the second half which Spurs began well. Janssen picked up the ball just inside the "Hammers"' half and ran through their defence before hitting a powerful effort that was saved by Anang. Sterling played in Roles for a chance that he blazed over.
Just after the hour Janssen went off and was replaced by Oakley-Boothe with Spurs reverting to their normal 4-1-4-1 formation. Hector-Ingram headed wide a cross by Lewis before Eyoma was shown a second yellow for a push on Hector-Ingram. Diallo crossed for Kemp to fire wide before Roles was booked for a late challenge on Lewis in retaliation for an earlier tackle. Both sides made a change before the end with Clarke replacing Bowden in midfield as the game finished level.
With both sides moving the ball quickly it was an entertaining match played mainly in midfield with some good approach work. Both sides had periods of dominance with the home side having most of the play overall. Spurs did not miss the loss of Eyoma and the home side did not take advantage of the extra man. Janssen looked much better than in the last game working well with Sterling. The point moved Spurs above Arsenal in the table. Spurs travel to Brighton & Hove Albion in February but before then they go to Norwich in the Premier League International Cup this Friday.
