All eyes on the home front now!
Whilst we eagerly anticipate Monday's Champions League Round of 16 draw, all eyes are on domestic football for the next two months, with Spurs still interested in all three local competitions. Next Wednesday we have the Carabao Cup quarter-final against the old enemy, but first up we have Burnley, whose form has suffered badly this season, perhaps because of their failed exhaustive programme in trying to reach the Europa League Group stages.
Sean Dyche's side got as far as the play-off round where they lost out to Olympiakos, who this week beat AC Milan 3-1 and took the Group F second place off the Italian side. Burnley qualified for this year's Europa League thanks to their seventh place last season. This was the first time the Turf Moor side qualified for Europe since 1967, when they played in the Inter-City Fairs Cup, which was the fore-runner of the UEFA Cup.
Last season, Burnley had a lot of resilience, spending almost the whole period in the top half. In fact, after drawing with us at Wembley, Burnley climbed into the top half with a win over Palace, and that's where they stayed. In last year's away game against Burnley Harry Kane scored his seventh hat-trick of 2017 in a 3-0 win. Only Manchester City and Arsenal matched or bettered our margin of victory over Burnley last season.
In the summer Burnley had something of a goalkeeper crisis as both Nick Pope and Tom Heaton were injured. Joe Hart was signed late in the window for £5 million from Man City, and has played in all 16 Premier League games. Last week, Burnley ground out a narrow win against Chris Hughton's Brighton side. It was Burnley's first win in 9 games, and only their third Premier League success of the season, enabling them to climb out of the bottom three. They are away to Arsenal next week, and surely face the risk of being in the relegation zone at Christmas. Perhaps I will check with mybookie regarding the odds on relegation for Burnley.
Former Spur Dean Marney made over 200 league appearances for Burnley, but none last season, mostly due to major injury. Marney is now 34 and playing for Joey Barton's Fleetwood. There is, of course, another former Spur - Aaron Lennon - at Burnley, and he will get massive cheers and acclaim if appearing tomorrow. Aaron can lay claim to involvement in previous Spurs heroics in Europe, such as AC Milan in the San Siro in 2011 and will always be remembered fondly by Spurs fans.
Reading the statistics above the number 7 crops up several times (7 away goals; away points; 17 goals for in the Premier League; 7 goals against; 17 points). All this couldn't help me from thinking about a couple of times Spurs put seven goals past the Clarets. In September 1968, we won 7-0 with goals by Cliff Jones (2), Jimmy Robertson, Jimmy Greaves (3 - 1 pen) and Martin Chivers. The other big win was also in September, but way back in 1930. That was 8-1 with goals by George "Billy" Cook (3), "Taffy" O'Callaghan (2), Ted Harper (2), and Willie Davies. Cook had two seasons with Tottenham, and that was his only hat-trick for the club.
Burnley put seven past Spurs in April 1964 (7-2). The Spurs team that day was Brown; Barton, Henry; Mullery, Norman, Beal; Jones, White, Smith, Greaves and Dyson. John White would play only one more game for Spurs before his tragic death on July 21st 1964. "The Ghost" scored in his last game too - a 1-0 win over Leicester.
Mauricio Pochettino is playing his cards close to his chest regarding the possible availability or otherwise of players due to return from injury. Serge Aurier and Mousa Dembele are only commencing on-field rehabilitation, so I do not expect to see them. Wanyama and Trippier also seem a little way off being fit. However, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth have entered the late stages of conditioning work. Mauricio says "We need to assess a few players tomorrow. We'll see, I cannot say if they will be available or not". With the busy programme to come, all these players will ideally be required.
Eric Dier did not get off the bench in our famous Nou Camp result on Tuesday night and will surely start this game. Where is another question, with Kyle Walker-Peters perhaps in line for another start at right back. Ben Davies will probably get the left-back slot, and we will have to see which of our midfield and attacking players have recovered sufficiently from the rigours of Barcelona.
Morale and confidence must surely be ultra-high after such a great week in which we have regained third place and qualified for the Round of 16. Games like this have to be won if we want to maintain a challenge on Manchester City and Liverpool. I feel confident too, and predict a 3-0 win at Wembley, where home crowds are now capped at 51,000 barring notification. Perhaps such a notification will arise for the Manchester United game which this week was confirmed at Wembley on January 13th.
Match referee Graham Scott is an occasional Premier League referee, and we last saw him at Stoke in April, when we won 2-1. Mr Scott has been in charge of four top flight games this season, including a high profile London Derby between Arsenal and West Ham.
· "It was Twenty Years ago today!" - On 12th December, 1998, Spurs drew 2-2 at home to Man Utd. Warning! This report contains highly sensitive material.
