One of my personal favourite Spurs Odyssey reports remains this account of an FA Cup visit to Ninian Park, Cardiff 12 years ago now in January 2007 - Cardiff 0 Spurs 0 - 07.01.07. Visits to that venue were notoriously unfriendly, but to their credit, last season "The Bluebirds" earned the accolade of "the highest rated club regarding the experience of away fans last season in The Championship", according to this article on the Football Supporters' Federation site. Incidentally, Southampton got the highest rating of Premier League teams. I don't have any negative memories of our one and only visit to Cardiff's new stadium.
Cardiff have not only replaced Swansea as the only Welsh team in this season's Premier League, but they also seem to have made a straight swap in the fixtures list. Our New Year's game was at Swansea on January 2nd last year (which we won 2-0), and here we are travelling to the Principality on New Year's Day 2019. The good news is that we will not be required to pay the Severn Bridge toll, which was recently stopped. It is hard to believe we are nearly twenty years into the new Millennium, but of course we are not going to the Millennium Stadium, but Cardiff's own stadium, which we last visited in September, 2013.
On that occasion, 22nd September, 2013 we won 1-0, thanks to a 93rd minute winner by Paulinho, who is now playing back in China with Guangzhou on loan from Barcelona.
We have only played three Premier League games against Cardiff, and have won all three 1-0. Eric Dier's goal was the difference between the two sides when we played at Wembley on 6th October. We weren't at our best but the win meant we had our best start to a Premier League season after 8 games. Now look where we are after 20 games!
Cardiff didn't over-invest after their promotion and manager Neil Warnock maintains a realistic outlook to their predicament, which looks like being a season-long campaign to avoid going straight back to the Championship. They had their worst start to a season after our match at Wembley, but 5 wins in their last 11 games has kept them out of the bottom three - just! Saturday's win at Leicester was both a surprise (their first away win of the season) and certainly a blessing. The only other points Warnock's men have managed away have both been 0-0 draws at Huddersfield and Crystal Palace.
One of those Cardiff wins was against Wolves, and included a cracking goal by Junior Hoilett. Other precious wins were against rivals at the foot of the table Fulham and Southampton.
I haven't seen a latest update regarding team news, but there does not seem to be any change for Spurs, who showed on Saturday against Wolves that they were straining at the seams. Whether or not Serge Aurier is fit, I'd say Trippier needs another break, and I would play Kyle Walker-Peters if necessary. Danny Rose will take the left back berth. I'd also say we need fresh legs in midfield and up front, but apart from Lucas Moura, it is hard to see where they are coming from. Cardiff will be missing Zohore, Ward and Richards. The last of these three has hardly played anyway all season.
On their home turf and buzzing after that win at Leicester, Cardiff do present a threat to Spurs. 33 year old Souleymane Bamba was immense for the defence on Saturday, and Spurs will need to be at their best, especially to win 2-0 as I have predicted. There might be free entry to Wales now, but there is no such thing as a free pass in the Premier League! I wish you a very happy, and healthy new year, and of course the very best for our team!
Match referee Kevin Friend was in charge of us for the home defeat against Manchester city in October. We lost, and Spurs Odyssey voters gave him only 4.3, perhaps upset at the number of niggly fouls by City that he let go, or did not punish sufficiently. Overall, Mr Friend does still have a decent average in all 23 games when he has refereed us since 2010.
· "It was Twenty Years ago today!" - 20 years ago on 2nd January, 1999, we beat Watford 5-2 in an FA Cup Third Round tie with goals by Iversen (2), Anderton (pen), Nielsen, and Fox. All but one of the goals were scored in the first half!
