It was an overcast morning for the fourth group match which saw the return fixture with Eindhoven. The match was being played on the U-16 pitch which was used last season. Spurs were unlucky not to win the away game as they dominated most of the game coming back from two goals down to draw 2-2. That was the third draw in the group leaving them needing a win to stay in contention.
Spurs lined up with Austin in goal behind Walcott and Eyoma with Lyons-Foster at right back and Brown on the left. Bowden and White anchored the midfield with Maghoma ahead of them flanked by Bennett on the right and Patterson on the left in support of Parrott up front. With the PL Cup game on Saturday in mind, Spurs had a strong bench to call upon if needed. On the Eindhoven bench was our former schoolboy Nonso Madueke who looked a good prospect.
Spurs defended the West end in the first half against a Dutch side which was more attacking than in the first game. Vertessen had an early effort that was wide before Spurs took the lead. It came from a corner on the left that was taken by Bowden and headed in by Walcott attacking the near post.
Eindhoven responded by pushing forward and Sidibe fired wide from a corner that saw him latch onto a clearance by White. Thomas shot wide before Sidibe had a free kick that Austin saved at the expense of a corner. Daverveld received a head injury from that corner which produced another. This one drew a save from the head of Piroe.
Spurs began to get their game going with Maghoma firing wide firstly from Brown's pass and then from a ball by Patterson. Bennett had an effort deflected for a corner as Spurs looked for a second goal. Patterson saw his effort deflected having been played in by Bowden before Sidibe got through to fire over.
Jaden Brown was booked for holding Zeegers after he had slipped on the ball. Austin was almost embarrassed when his kick rebounded off a Dutch player and back into his arms. Walcott had to clear off the line from Piroe as the visitors pushed late in the half and Austin also had to save from Vertessen so that Spurs could go in at half-time with a lead.
Eindhoven made a change for the start of the second half as they tried to up their game and within a minute Vertessen had fired wide from a Sidibe cross. Sadilek was booked for a foul on Bennett as Spurs sought to take advantage of the space that was opening up.
Walcott hit over from another Bowden corner before Spurs made their first change. Oakley-Boothe replaced Bowden to increase the attacking options and soon after Madueke came on for Eindhoven.
Obispo hit a free kick wide before Patterson drew a save from a lay-off by Parrott. Patterson then gave way to Markanday who went to the right flank to allow Bennett to move to the left. The winger had already begun to drift to the left where he is most effective. Timan had come on at the same time and he had an early chance that he hit over. Another change saw Roles come on for Maghoma to play behind Parrott.
Zeegers was booked for a foul on Bennett as the game became more open as both sides went for goal. A mistake by White allowed Vertessen a chance that he put wide. Bennett was booked for a pull which he may take as an assist for Spurs second goal because from the free kick conceded he collected the clearance and raced upfield taking the covering defender with him before crossing to Parrott, who was unmarked in the area, to seal the game.
This was a much better Eindhoven performance so to win this game after the draw in Holland was a very good result. It was a must-win game as Eindhoven are challenging Spurs for second spot in the group. Spurs move into second place after Barcelona beat Inter 2-0 with two to play. Next up is the home game against Inter at the end of the month.
