Looking for a special performance

It was in October last year that Brighton beat Spurs for the first time in the Premier League. It was truly one of the worst Spurs performances under Mauricio Pochettino, whose reign would last 6 more games. Mauricio's last league win was against his previous side Southampton, and the Brighton game followed the 7-2 home debacle against Bayern Munich.

The loss at The Amex Stadium was agonising for Hugo Lloris who had to be stretchered off and was given oxygen during his initial treatment. The side which lost to Brighton was a strong one, except to say that Pochettino chose to play Sissoko at right back. Despite that defeat, we have gained more Premier League points per game against Brighton than against any other current Premier league team (2.166). We have only played 6 such games, of course.

Hugo did not return to the team until January, so it was Paulo Gazzaniga who was in goal on Boxing Day for our last game against "The Seagulls" which we won 2-1. Paulo's last game for Spurs was on March 1st and he has been left out in the cold since the start of this season. He was not named for the Europa league squad and Joe Hart has moved above him in the pecking order. That Boxing Day game was won with a quality goal scored by Dele Alli, who knows the feeling of being left out in the cold. Dele's situation is not likely to improve after he was one of four players hauled off at Antwerp at half-time on Thursday.

For one reason or another Brighton have struggled to get positive results and find themselves closest to the bottom four with five points from their six games. After an opening game defeat to Chelsea they stormed to a 3-0 win at St. James' Park the following week. Graham Potter's side were desperately unlucky to lose 3-2 at home to Manchester United when the Old Trafford side were awarded a penalty after the final whistle had gone due to a VAR review. Inevitably, Bruno Fernandes scored from the spot.

Graham Potter was appointed to improve Brighton's lot after the dismissal of Chris Hughton who only recenty was appointed to the Nottingham Forest job. With Potter in charge they finished two places higher last season than the year before, with five more points. Changes this season included the departures (on loan) of Shane Duffy and Glenn Murray. Aaron Mooy, who had initially been on loan but was then signed from Huddersfield is now playing for Shanghai Dongya in China.

Adam Lallana, whose career started at Southampton (where he played under Pochettino before signing for Liverpool) signed in the summer. Lallana hasn't managed 90 minutes yet, but he has been involved in every Premier League game so far this season, and does offer sharp skills in and around the area when given the opportunity. Centre-back Ben White returned from a loan spell at Leeds, and has started every game, usually at the back, although he played in midfield on Monday night against West Brom.

Skipper Lewis Dunk was sent off near the end of the draw against Crystal Palace, so new signing Joel Veltman stepped into the back three against West Brom. 28-year-old Veltman was signed from Ajax and was involved in both our Champions League matches in April and May 2019. Veltman came on just after Lucas Moura had scored the second of his hat-trick goals.

Apart from the goal-scoring skills of Maupay and the delivery of Trossard, another player to look out for will be right back Tariq Lamptey, signed in January from Chelsea. Lamptey is only just 20 and has plenty of pace and skill. He likes to get in and around the area too. Jose will need, and will have a plan to negate this player, who is surely bound to move on in another year or two. He has certainly impressed me in virtually every game he has played this year.

So, in view of the events of last October, and indeed Thursday night, Spurs will surely be looking for a special performance, particularly with Hugo leading the side. Jose's selection will resemble closely the one which played at Burnley on Monday night, although they found the going tough up at Turf Moor. I am still confidently predicting a home win - 3-1. This will be our first PPV game and kicks off at 7.15pm tomorrow night.

Match referee Graham Scott was in charge of our Boxing Day win over Brighton. This will be his first game in charge of this season and as his first game with Spurs was our away win at Middlesbrough in September 2016, this is just his eleventh Spurs game in the middle. The only other game he has refereed us since Brighton was the July win over Everton.
