Let's be dynamic against Dinamo. (I'll get me Croat)

This time last year (10th March 2020) we were playing our last pre-lockdown game when we lost 3-0 away to Leipzig. For most of the Spurs fans who travelled, that was the last time any of them (me included) watched a game inside a stadium. That was also our last Champions League game, of course, but we hope to be playing in that competition next season. After a good run of three successive league wins, we are back in the hunt for one of the top four places, but our other path is to win the Europa League. To do so will require us to play 7 more games having played 11 matches to reach this Round of 16 in which we face Dinamo Zagreb.

THFC would not allow me the fly the Spurs Odyssey flag in the stadium for these behind closed doors games but it will feature in my match report!

Until last night Harry Kane held the record for being the quickest to score 20 Champions League goals, but that record is now held by the phenomenon that is Erling Braut (not brute) Haaland who scored both of Borussia Dortmund’s goals last night against Sevilla. Haaland has achieved the feat in 10 fewer games. Harry will, we hope, be scoring more Champions league goals for Spurs next season.

We have met Dinamo Zagreb in competition once before. That was in November 2008 when the magical Luka Modric and his compatriot Vedrun Corluka were on our books. Having been signed earlier that season from Manchester City, Corluka was illegible to play in the UEFA Cup having played in three qualifying matches. Another former Zagreb player Niko Kranjcar joined us from Portsmouth the following year.

Kranjcar retired in 2018, having last played for Rangers. Corluka is still playing - for Lokomotiv Moscow at the age of 35, whilst Modric (also 35) is still integral to Real Madrid. In 2008 the UEFA Cup groups consisted of 5 teams, who played each other once only either at home or away. Three of the teams qualified for the next phase. Spurs finished second to Udinese in their group before we had a change of manager from Juande Ramos to Harry Redknapp, who liked his Croats. Kranjcar had played for Harry at Pompey.

Gareth Bale was in the Spurs team that beat Dinamo Zagreb 4-0 in 2008. Modric was inspirational and directly involved in two of the goals. Darren Bent scored a hat-trick (his only one for Spurs) and our other goal was scored by Tom Huddlestone. We were knocked out in the Round of 32 by Shakhtar Donetsk. Dinamo Zagreb finished bottom of our group and did not qualify for the knock-out phase.

Dinamo Zagreb won their 21st Croatian title last season, competing a hat-trick of such triumphs. They currently sit top of their league and beat Rijeka 2-0 on Saturday. Zagreb have lost just two of their 23 league games, and only one other game. That was a Champions League Third qualifying round game, but that defeat gave them a passage to the Europa League. Dinamo Zagreb were in the same group as Wolfsberger, who they beat 1-0 away and 3-0 at home. Dinamo topped their group. This is only the second time the Croatian team have qualified to the group stage of a continental competition.

Zagreb's main goalscoring threat comes from Swiss International Mario Gavranovic, who has scored 14 goals in all competitions, but only two in his last 14 games stretching back to mid-December. The other main scorer is Mislav Orsic who has 12 league goals to his name. Bruno Petkovic also scores regularly, with 11 goals in all club games this season. Look out too for Nigerian forward Iyayi Atiemwen, aged 25, who also has the name "Believe". Zagreb's number one keeper (and also that of the Croatian national team, is 26-year-old Dominik Livakovic

According to the original draw, we should have been playing our away leg of this tie first, but the venues have been reversed due to UEFA rules not allowing two clubs from the same city to be at home on the same night. Mikel Arteta has already had a moan about the fact that we have the advantage over them by not having to travel before Sunday's derby.

What we do need to do is to build a comfortable lead tomorrow night (kick-off 8pm on BT SPORT) to take to Croatia next week. Jose Mourinho has said he has no injury issues, excepting Lo Celso, who now has a minor back problem. Jose says he will field a different team from that which beat Palace. Dele Alli, Matt Doherty and Pierre-Emile Hĝjbjerg would miss the second leg if they were to be booked tomorrow, so Jose may not want to risk that.

Eric Dier, Ben Davies, Tanguy Ndombele, Dele and Steven Bergwijn saw no action against Palace whilst Sissoko and Lamela came off the bench. There could be a place for all of them tomorrow with perhaps Aurier at right back. I suspect Jose will want to start with Kane and Son, but whoever plays I hope for and predict a win by two or three goals. Let's be dynamic against Dinamo. (I'll get me Croat)

Referee Serdar Gözübüyük and all the officials including VAR are from the Netherlands. We have never previously encountered Mr. Gözübüyük, who is 35 and was born in Haarlem in The Netherlands. he has been in charge of other Europa League and Champions League games this season, and International games. We have previous met VAR Pol van Boekel as either an assistant, or as VAR.
