Can Spurs manage a crucial win?

When Bruno Fernandes scored his tenth Manchester United penalty in only the second minute of last October's game at Old Trafford, little did we realise that Spurs would go on to such a sensational 6-1 away win! The facts and figures surrounding that marvellous occasion are recorded in the match report which was such a pleasure to write, and hopefully to read.

That win followed another high-scoring victory in the Europa League over Maccabi Haifa and came only two weeks after another great away win at Southampton. Spurs were in a purple match of form with both Son and Kane banging in the goals. Harry was assisting Son for most of his goals too. A month after beating United we went top of the league where we stayed for a few weeks. The purple patch passed and a slide in form led us a few places down the league.

However, the fact is that if we can win this game, we would be giving ourselves a real chance of climbing back into the top four. Whether we are capable of such a result remains to be seen.

Fernandes scored his eleventh penalty of this season near the end of United's Europa League quarter-final last night, which means that 19 of his 36 goals for United have been from the spot. He is a great player and has made such a difference to United since his purchase in January last year. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team sit comfortably in second place, surely assured of Champions League football next season.

Apart from 75 minutes at Southampton on New Year's Day last year, Harry Kane had to sit out Spurs' games until June, but since then he has also scored 36 club goals, of which just 6 have been from the penalty spot. I'll let you draw your own conclusions from those comparitive statistics of the two goascorers. They do tend to speak for themselves.

Harry Maguire has been ever-present in United's 30 league games this season. Maguire has played every minute of those games. Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford have appeared in all 30 games, with 29 and 28 starts respectively. Such is the importance of these players. Others high on the appearances list are Wan-Bissaka, Shaw, McTominay, De Gea, Fred, Lindelof and Martial in the order listed here. David De Gea made his first appearance last night since the end of February, after being allowed home to Spain for compassionate reasons regarding the birth of a child. Henderson has been covering his absence, keeping clean sheets in 7 of his last 10 games. Of the most regular starters, Maguire, Fernandes, Rashford, Wan-Bissaka, Shaw, Lindelof and McTominay all started last night, although Shaw was withdrawn at half-time and Rashford went off after 65 minutes.

United are unbeaten in their last 10 league games (last beaten 2-1 at home to Sheffield United in January!) and they are famously now unbeaten away from home in The Premier League since January last year. That is a total of 22 away league games. Their one defeat in their last 17 games in all competitions was at Leicester in the FA Cup quarter-final. Those figures which include a 2-0 derby win at The Etihad are impressive and make Spurs' task formidable.

We have beaten United in 5 of our last 10 league meetings, which includes two away wins. This sequence began with a 3-0 home win on Sunday 10th April five years ago when Dele Alli (70), Toby Alderweireld (74) and Erik Lamela (76) scored three goals in quick succession. Last season's home game was our first post-lockdown game. Steven Bergwijn gave us a 27th minute lead, but guess who equalised from the penalty spot in the 81st minute?

After our win at Old Trafford in October and on deadline day which followed, United completed the signing of the unattached 33-year-old Edinson Cavani (7 seasons at PSG). Cavani secured a salary of some £250,000 per week. He is now 34. Cavani has appeared in 19 Premier League games (9 as sub), scoring 6 league goals. United also signed left back Alex Telles from Porto. Telles replaced Shaw against Granada last night.

Spurs have twice scored 6 goals in home games against United. The first occasion was in September 1932. George Hunt and Willie Evans scored two. Jimmy Brain and "Taffy" O'Callaghan scored the other goals. Spurs had beaten United 4-1 in their previous meeting, also at White Hart Lane. In October 1962 we won 6-2. Jimmy Greaves scored a hat-trick. Terry Medwin scored twice and his mate Cliff Jones added another goal. The United team that day included Maurice Setters and Albert Quixall (who scored a penalty), both of whom have sadly passed away over the last year.

We managed a league double in the 62-63 season with a 2-0 away win in March. Cliff Jones and Frank Saul scored that day. Spurs would go on to win a historic European Cup-Winners' Cup, whilst United would win the FA Cup, although United finished 19th in the league that season and we were runners-up to Everton. The following season, we met in the Cup-Winners' Cup when United came out on top.

Whilst we have now beaten United four times away in the Premier League, the last time we managed a league "double" against them was in the 89-90 season. We met first at Old Trafford in December, winning 1-0 with Gary Lineker the scorer. Lineker andd Gascoigne scored our goals in a 2-1 home win in April, 1990. For good measure, Spurs also beat United 3-0 in that season's League Cup Third Round in October, 1989. Lineker scored that day as well.

Anthony Martial could be out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury. Shaw and Pogba will have late fitness tests before Sunday's game (4.30pm on Sky). As for Spurs they will definitely be without Ben Davies, who has a calf injury. There is no return date for Matt Doherty as yet either. Hopefully, Toby Alderweireld and Serge Aurier will be available on Sunday. We need Aurier's pace and Toby's reliability at the back. I'd go for Toby next to Joe Rodon personally. I'd also like to see more solidity in front of the defence, and that means Sissoko next to Hojbjerg for me with Ndombele playing further forward. The Kane and Son combo that was so effective at Old Trafford needs to be at its best on Sunday. Ever the optimist, I am predicting a 2-1 home win!

Somewhat remarkably this is the first time a Spurs match has been refereed by Chris Kavanagh this season. This is only his eighth game in charge of Spurs. The last time we saw him on the middle was in our 3-1 defeat at Bramall Lane last July. Mr Kavanagh has had charge of 16 Premier League games this season along with 6 European and Nations League matches. Mr. Kavanagh was in charge of the December Manchester derby at Old Trafford.
