Former Tottenham star urges club to appoint De Zerbi as manager
Former Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Teddy Sheringham has urged the club to appoint Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager.
The Brighton & Hove Albion boss has showcased his talents this season, guiding the Seagulls to an unexpected sixth place finish in the Premier League.
The south coast outfit have qualified for Europe for the first time in their history – a feat which has led to several other clubs casting admiring glances in De Zerbi’s direction.
He has been linked with the vacant managerial position at Tottenham and Sheringham believes he would be a good fit for the London club. “I think Roberto De Zerbi has come across like a shining light this season,” Sheringham told football betting site Betway.
“Some of Brighton’s performances at the end of the season were so impressive.
“Going to the Emirates and disposing of Arsenal in the way they did and the way they went head-to-head with Manchester City.
“The way Brighton have played against the top teams has just been nothing short of phenomenal.
“De Zerbi knows what he wants - he understands the game and will make players better.”
It would be fair to say Tottenham’s search for a permanent manager has not gone smoothly, with several managers rejecting the role.
Julian Nagelsmann and Arne Slot were among the bosses linked with Tottenham, but both ruled themselves out of the race. Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou has been touted as a possible candidate, but his lack of Premier league experience could count against him.
Whoever ends up in the hot-seat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faces a massive rebuilding job after a hugely disappointing season.
Tottenham ended the league campaign eighth in the standings, while they made early exits in each of the cup competitions they contested. With European football off the table for the 2023/24 season, attracting top-class players to the club this summer will not be easy.
However, the most pressing concern will be resolving the future of striker Harry Kane, who has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United. The England captain is desperate to win major silverware and may decide to force a move with just one year remaining on his contract.
The 29-year-old has shown no sign of signing a new deal at Tottenham, which means this summer is the last chance they will have of securing a sizeable fee for him.
Sheringham believes Kane would be a superb signing for United, but thinks Tottenham can ill-afford to lose what he brings to the table.
“If these two clubs want to be better, they need Kane,” Sheringham added. “Tottenham need to keep him, Manchester United need to sign him.
“He's exactly the type of player that Manchester United need. He's a leader, he scores goals and he's professional. He will drive your team on.
“He is the full package as a centre forward. He would be frightening for Manchester United.”
