Please lift us from our depression Spurs

Brentford v Spurs, 13.08.23

Thanks to Eugene Gasper for this picture

By the time we play Brentford tomorrow (2pm - SKY), we could be even lower in the league table. Everton host Leicester this afternoon. Both teams have benefitted from our dismal League form over the last two weeks and a win would take Everton above us. Ipswich play Southampton, so one or both of those teams will draw closer. I am desperate for Spurs to lift us all from this depression.

We opened last season with a trip to the GTECH Community Stadium and drew 2-2. Two men who we will not see tomorrow scored our goals. Cristian Romero powered home a header from a James Maddison free kick (we won't see him either) to open the scoring and Emerson Royal scored his last goal in any competition to level the scores in first half added time. Maddison recorded a second assist in his first Premier League game for Spurs. Two men we will see tomorrow (Mbeumo and Wissa) scored Brentford's two goals.

Both Mbeumo (14) and Wissa (11) head the list of Brentford's scorers. Both feature in the Premier League's top eight scorers at this time. Spurs' top three league scorers (Maddison 8, Johnsson and Solanke 7) are on the injured list.

Brentford are in their fourth Premier League season and seem to be coping more than adequately without their former top scorer Ivan Toney who hit 67 goals in his 128 league games for "The Bees". Ivan Toney's salary at Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia is reported to be around £400,000 after tax, making him one of the highest paid footballers at the present time. He's scored just six goals in 13 league starts, but also has four goals in the Asia Champions League. Toney signed for £40 million last August and plays in a team which includes Edouard Mendy in goal, Riyad Mahrez and Roberto Firmino. Toney is considered to be the highest-paid English footballer at this time.

In our home game this season, (which we won 3-1 with goals from our top three missing scorers!) Bryan Mbeumo's opening goal was timed at 23 seconds. Brentford became the second team to score in the first minute of consecutive games in the Premier League; previously by Manchester City versus Newcastle United and Arsenal in February 2019.

Brentford were without Josh Dasilva, Aaron Hickey, Mathias Jensen, Gustavo Nunes and Igor Thiago in September. Excepting Jensen, the same players are again missing. Thomas Frank must be relieved his team are not playing two games per week, like Spurs. Brentford lost 3-1 at Newcastle in the League Cup quarter-final, and suffered a shock home defeat by Plymouth in the FA Cup. By beating Elfsborg on Thursday night, Spurs have at least given themselves two midweek days off in February, although they still have to negotiate 6 games, starting tomorrow.

The team scoring first has failed to win in any of our last five league meetings (D2, L3).

When they scored in the opening minute of their 1-1 home draw against West Ham on September 28th, Brentford became the first team in the Premier League to score in the first minute of three consecutive games. Those games were against Manchester City, Spurs and West Ham. Bryan Mbeumo scored the second and third goals in the sequence.

Sergio Reguilon, who is eligible and probably available for this game, played for Brentford in the second half of last season. He made 14 league starts and made two appearances off the bench.

Christian Norgaard and Kevin Schade are available for Brentford, after going off injured in last week's game. Left-back Rico Henry has a hamstring injury. January signing (on loan from Fiorentina) Michael Kayode could make his debut at full-back.

Radu Dragusin has been added to the Spurs injury list (currently nine players) after his knee injury sustained on Thursday. Micky van de Ven came through his return okay, but is not likely to play 90 minutes tomorrow. Djed Spence should return, along with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. Our team might read:- Kinsky; Pedro Porro/Spence, Gray, Van de Ven, Davies; Bentancur, Bissouma; Kulusevski; Moore, Richarlison, Son (Capt.). I've given up predicting Spurs results, and fear the worst.

We haven't seen Australian born referee Jarred Gillett since our home game against Arsenal last September. This will be Mr. Gillett's tenth Spurs game. Mr Gillett was in charge of our home defeat to Brentford in May 2023 when Mbeumo scored twice and Wissa added a third goal.
