Don't come second Spurs!

Welcome to N17

It's a second London Derby league game for both sides. Spurs have a second consecutive home game in the Premier League after last week's defeat to Arsenal. Brentford have a second away league game after narrow defeat at The Etihad where goal machine Erling Haaland just fell short of a third consecutive EPL hat-trick.

We now have lost six of our last nine London derbies in the Premier League. Only Wolves and Everton have lost more games than Spurs since March this year. We do not want to be coming second tomorrow! (3pm kick-off)

Spurs have lost more than one of their opening four games of a season in the Premier League for the first time since 2011-12. In 2011, we should have played Everton at home in the first game, but that was postponed due to riots in Tottenham. Our first two games were away to Man Utd and home to Man City, and we lost both. Harry Redknapp was in charge and we next beat Wolves away and Liverpool (4-0) at home!

As last week's result shows, Thomas Frank's side never makes it easy for the best of sides. Such was the situation when we won 3-2 last January. I bemoaned "Ange-ball" writing that there "were too many sideways and backward passes and too many errors when trying to find a team-mate". Spurs went one down to a Neal Maupay goal, but blitzed Brentford early in the second half with three goals by Udogie, Johnson and Richarlison. Ivan Toney got a goal back after 67 minutes, but we held onto our lead.

Maupay rarely misses an opportunity to taunt Tottenham fans when he scores. He was on loan from Everton, but has now joined former Brighton coach Roberto de Zerbi at Marseille. Maupay scored his first goal for his new club last week.

Ivan Toney has departed for the filthy lucre available in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli, whose squad includes Riyad Mahrez and Roberto Firmino. We won't be seeing a Toney "no look" penalty in England anytime soon. When Toney scored from the penalty spot in March against Belgium in only his second England game, he became the first Brentford player to score for the senior English team.

Brentford invested a record fee in excess of £30 million for Igor Thiago, who is a Brazilian striker from Club Brugge. The 23-year-old suffered a meniscus injury during their 5-2 win against AFC Wimbledon in July - in which he scored twice - and after surgery he is out till late in the year.

To aggravate their striker problems Yoane Wissa suffered an ankle injury last week and will be out for two months. Brentford do still have the potency of Bryan Mbeumo who has scored three goals this season in both their wins against Crystal Palace and Southampton.

"The Bees" beat a Leyton Orient side which included Spurs loanee Jamie Donley 3-1 on Tuesday in their League Cup game with goals scored by Fabio Carvalho (signed for £22.5 million from Liverpool), Damsgaard and Norgaard (two of the four Danes in Frank's squad). Mathias Jensen is another Dane who withdrew from International duty with a calf injury and will also miss this game.

Sergio Reguilon, who last appeared for Spurs in April 2022 was a surprise inclusion on our bench in Wednesday night's match at Coventry. Last season Reguilon appeared in 16 league games whilst on loan at Brentford.

Spurs will probably start with the same team which faced Arsenal last week. They will hopefully have learned the lessons of their defensive frailties, and demonstrate the need for more aggressive forward play. I'm writing this before Ange's afternoon press conference, but assume neither Odobert or Werner will be available tomorrow. My optimistic prediction is for a clean sheet and a 2-0 win for Spurs, with a first goal for Solanke! It has to happen sometime!

John Brooks is our match referee tomorrow, and for the first time this season. Indeed, this is Mr. Brooks' first Premier League game in the middle this season. It's his eighth Spurs game, having officiated four of our matches last season, including a 3-1 home win over Crystal Palace.

Did you know? - Apart from Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic (now playing in Saudi Arabia)Ivan Toney is the only player to score more than 30 goals in the second tier this century. Mitrovic scored 43 league goals in 2021/22. Toney's total was 31 in the previous season.
