Spurs hoping for Solanke to play against his old team

Bournemouth v Spurs, 26.08.23

Thanks to Cassim Patel for this picture, taken at last year's corresponding fixture.

Ange Postecoglou announced in today's press conference that Dominic Solanke returned to training today and whilst not quite 100% fit he was hoping that Dominic would be able to play against his old team. Despite his knock in his brief time on the field in the Fulham game, Archie Gray is fit to play, but none of our other injured players will be available.

Thankfully, Radu Dragusin and Ben Davies are covering the centre-back positions capably. In this busy period with two games a week, Ange will probably want to rotate in two or three positions, but Spurs will need to be at their best to beat a Bournemouth side that has recently beaten both Arsenal and Manchester City. This might be a game for Pedro Porro to have a break at the expense of Djed Spence. Personally, I wouldn't mind if Son was rested tomorrow night, and I'd opt for a front six of Sarr, Bissouma, Kulusevski, Johnson, Solanke and Werner.

Manchester City lost their first league game of the season and ended a 32-game unbeaten in the EPL when Bournemouth beat them (for the first time) 2-1 on 2nd November. This was the second in City's sequence of five consecutive defeats which began and ended with Spurs.

Bournemouth's Justin Kluivert became the first player in 67 years to score a hat-trick of penalties in an English top-flight game when "The Cherries" beat Wolves 4-2 at Molineux last Saturday. The last occasion was Ken Barnes for Manchester City in their 6-2 win over Everton at Maine Road on 7 December 1957. Bournemouth's record signing (their replacement for Dominic Solanke), Evanilson, won all three penalties on Saturday.

Evanilson (aged 25), signed from Porto, has scored four goals so far for his new club, having scored 13 in 27 league appearances last season. Kluivert (son of Patrick), signed from Roma last year and has five league goals to his name, four of which were penalties.

Under manager Andoni Iraola, Bournemouth have become a useful side and on their day, a match for anybody. Facing a Spurs side, hopefully including Solanke, they will be determined to get a result in front of their diminutive home crowd.

The powers that be have not been kind to the travelling fans, who face an 8.15pm kick-off (Amazon Prime), and no train back to London after the game.

Bournemouth have come a long way since I saw them play in Chesterfield's last game at their Saltergate Stadium in May 2010. Eddie Howe was their manager, and Bournemouth were promoted that season from League Two, on their path to the Premier League, where they arrived in 2015, still led by Howe. Bournemouth's eight seasons in the Premier League were interrupted by a two-season spell back in The Championship between 2020 and 2022.

After the relegation of Luton last season, Bournemouth are once again our favourite current Premier League opponent, as we have managed 2.28 points per game in our 14 Premier League meetings. We achieved our third Premier League double over "The Cherries" last season, but we have previously lost two Premier League games against the South coast side.

The first of these defeats was in May 2019 when both Son and Juan Foyth were sent off either side of half-time. The nine men held on until Nathan Ake (now at Man City) scored an added time winner.

The second such result was in April last year when we lost 3-2 at home. Son had given us a 14th minute lead but Bournemouth went 2-1 up through Vina and Solanke (his only goal against us). Danjuma grabbed an 88th minute equaliser, but in the fifth minute of added time Dominic Solanke fed the ball to substitute Ouattara who had the time and space inside the left of Spurs area to score low in front of the ecstatic travelling fans.

Anything could happen in tomorrow night's game, and I fear it may not go our way. Of course I hope for a positive result, and that at least the late-night travellers will go home smiling.

This will be referee Simon Hooper's tenth Spurs game, having last had charge of us in April, when we beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 at home. Mr. Hooper was also in charge when we beat "The Cherries" 3-1 at home last December.

Did you know? - Bournemouth were in the Third Division South when they became FA Cup giant-killers against Spurs in February 1957. The Spurs team which lost 3-1 were Ditchburn; Baker, Hopkins; Blanchflower, Ryden, Marchi; Medwin, Harmer, Smith, Stokes and Robb. Terry Medwin scored our goal and Jimmy Anderson was our manager. Bournemouth's feat was made more remarkable by the fact we finished as runners-up to Manchester United that season. We won just five of our remaining 14 games after the Bournemouth defeat.
