Spurs are on a high
Thanks to Cassim Patel for the picture, taken at last year's game
Having beaten West Ham 4-1 last week in their third London Derby match of the season, Spurs travel to Selhurst Park on Sunday (2pm kick-off) for their first away London meeting this term. The two teams will be in contrasting moods. Spurs are on a high after that hammering of "The Irons" (and Thursday's Europa League win over AZ Alkmaar), whilst Palace are struggling. Oliver Glasner's "Eagles" are one of four Premier League sides without a win after 8 games.
This is also Palace's fourth London Derby of the season (there are 12 for each London side in 24/25). Their first three league games were in London, away to Brentford (lost 2-1), home to West Ham (lost 2-0) and away to Chelsea (drew 1-1).
Ebere Eze scored Palace's goal at Chelsea and also scored in Palace's League Cup win at Loftus Road. Eze scored Palace's goal in our 3-1 home win in March, and at the end of the game was fawned upon so much by Spurs players that it seemed a certainty he would move our way in the summer. That was not to be, although Glasner lost several key players in the summer.
Michael Olise, who had been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea, was snapped up by Bayern Munich for whom he has already scored 6 goals in the Bundesliga and Champions League. Defender Joachim Andersen returned to Fulham, and Odsonne Edouard was allowed a loan move to Leicester after striker Eddie Nketiah signed for £25 million from Arsenal. Nketiah has yet to score a league goal this season after 382 minutes of game-time.
Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has moved to Wolves and Dean Henderson (capped by England against Finland this month) has re-taken the number one shirt. Henderson made a ricket of trying to save from Chris Wood last Monday night to give Forest their first home win of this season.
Jordan Ayew was also allowed a move to Leicester. Summer signings included former Watford wing-man Ismaila Sarr from Marseille, Japanese forward Daichi Kamada (who played for Glasner at Eintracht Frankfurt) from Lazio, and defenders Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg along with Riad Chadi from Barcelona.
Glasner's insistence on playing three at the back does not seem to be working.
That March game at Spurs was his second in charge of Palace, and Palace's form did improve dramatically following his appointment. They won Glasner's first game 3-0 and ended the season with a run of 6 wins in their last 7 games. Those wins included a 5-2 over West Ham, 2-0 against Newcastle, a 4-0 over Manchester United, and a last day 5-0 over Champions League qualifiers Aston Villa. Palace also recorded a league double over Erik Ten Hag's side.
Jean-Philippe Mateta scored 16 goals (13 of which came in Palace's last 16 games) and provided 4 assists in PL last season. After Oliver Glasner's arrival, he scored more Premier League goals than any other player.
Mateta played a prominent part in France's Olympic journey to the final when they lost against Spain. Mateta scored five goals in The Olympics, including one in the final. Michael Olise was also a part of that team. Mateta has been used cautiously so far this season, due to his Olympic commitment, but he scored both league goals against Leicester and also two of four against Norwich in the second round of the Carabao Cup. Palace have a difficult trip to Villa Park next Wednesday night.
Crystal Palace had four players named in Gareth Southgate's final Euro 2024 squad of 26 players. They were Dean Henderson, Marc Guehi, Adam Wharton and Eberechi Eze. After James Maddison's ejection from the training squad of 33, Spurs had no representative in an England tournament squad for the first time since 2014. Two future Spurs goalkeepers (Joe Hart and Fraser Forster) were in that 2014 World Cup squad. Three ex-Spurs players were in this year's squad - Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier and of course Harry Kane.
Adam Wharton was one of five players in England's 26-man Euro 24 squad who had no game time. The others were goalkeepers Dean Henderson, Aaron Ramsdale and outfield players Lewis Dunk along with Joe Gomez.
Crystal Palace have won only one of their last 18 Premier League games against Tottenham Hotspur: a 3-0 victory at Selhurst Park in September 2021. We won last season's away game (exactly one year ago to the day) 2-1, thanks to a Joel Ward own goal and a 66th minute team goal finished deftly by Son.
"Sonny" has been involved in 11 goals in 16 Premier League appearances against Crystal Palace with nine goals and two assists. Our captain also scored our third goal in the 3-1 home win last March. Sadly, the latest news is that "Sonny" is very unlikely to take part in this game. Most of those who started last Saturday's game were either rested completely against Alkmaar, or played limited minutes. Much as some would love to see Mikey Moore start again, I think perhaps Wilson Odobert will get the nod to play on the left. I'll go for a 3-1 away win!
If selected, James Maddison is looking for his 50th Premier League goal. Six of his EPL goals (so far) have been for Spurs.
Darren Bond referees Spurs for the first time. Mr. Bond has had charge of three EPL games so far this season. A potential good omen for Palace is that he officiated their 5-0 home win over Aston Villa at the end of last season. That remains Palace's last league win.
