Both clubs have their eyes on different prizes

Welcome to N17

There should be a great Tottenham Hotspur Stadium welcome tomorrow for Europa League Cup Finalists Spurs (2.15pm kick-off - not televised in the UK). Both clubs are left with nothing to play for with regards to the Premier League, but have their eyes on different prizes.

Congratulations to Crystal Palace, who by beating Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-final last month reached their third FA Cup Final. Palace have never yet won a major trophy, having lost both the 1990 and 2016 FA Cup Finals to Manchester United. Next week, on the penultimate weekend of the Premier League season, Palace face Manchester City, who are only too familiar with Wembley.

Twelfth-placed Palace have left themselves a little too much to do in the race for a League place qualification for Europe, but of course an FA Cup Final win next week would give them passage across the channel for the first time since a brief Intertoto Cup entry in 1998. Palace lost both legs of their one European tie 2-0 to Turkish side Samsunspor. Former Spur Dean Austin made his Palace debut in those first two games of the 98/99 season. Terry Venables was Palace's coach.

Three points in our penultimate home game of the season would ease the fear of our lowest ever Premier League finish, but we are also still at risk of a lowest ever points tally. We have 38 at the moment and need seven to beat our worst Premier League tally of 44 points in 1997/98. However, with Manchester United in Bilbao in mind, I expect us to see those players who did not start on Thursday in Norway. Oliver Glasner will surely also be keeping his first choice team's powder dry.

It's hard to believe that when we met in October Palace were one of four Premier League teams without a win and this had been their worst Premier League start since the early 90s. In 1992, under Steve Coppell "The Eagles" failed to win any of their first 8 games, one of which was a 2-2 away draw against Spurs. Palace were relegated but bounced straight back and in 1994, with Alan Smith now in charge, they waited till their eighth game for a win. That was a 2-1 home win over Arsenal. John Salako scored both Palace's goals and former Palace man Ian Wright scored for the gooners.

Of course, in October, "Doctor Hotspur" came to town, and Palace achieved their first league win of the season! Palace have won 10 more league games since then, while Spurs have won just 7.

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored Palace's winner against us at Selhurst Park. That was his eighth league goal of the season, and he now has 14 EPL goals to his name, having scored 16 last season. 27-year-old Mateta suffered a horrific ear injury in Palace's 3-1 FA Cup fifth round victory over Millwall on 1st March. Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts charged out his goal and injured the French Olympic striker in a crazy head-high tackle. Roberts was sent off after just 8 minutes and served a 6-game suspension due to the severity of the challenge. Mateta still wears a specially tailored head/ear guard as a result of the incident.

Historically, Palace have been our favourite (current) Premier League team to play. We have gained 64 points at an average of 2.06 points per game over 31 meetings.

Spurs are guaranteed to finish in the bottom half of the table for the first time since coming 11th in 2007-08. Optimistically, I am predicting a 2-1 Spurs win.

Ernie Walley, who passed away earlier this year aged 91, was at the time the oldest surviving ex-Spurs player, having made five league appearances in the mid-50s. As a coach, Ernie spent thirteen years at Crystal Palace, including a spell as caretaker manager following Terry Venables departure in October, 1980. Palace won three and drew one of their five games under Ernie, and he stayed on as Malcolm Allison's assistant until the mid-1980s. Ernie was in temporary charge when we beat Palace 4-2 at White Hart Lane in November 1980. Garth Crooks scored a hat-trick and Steve Archibald scored the second of our goals. Vince Hilaire and Ian Walsh scored for Palace, whose team included future Spurs player Terry Fenwick and future manager Gerry Francis.

Ken Hancock, who passed away last month, aged 87, was a rarely used understudy to Pat Jennings, and made just three league appearances plus three cup appearances for Spurs in his two years with the club between 1969 and 1971. Ken was signed from Ipswich (for whom he made 180 appearances). One of his rare Tottenham senior games was away to Crystal Palace on 19th September 1970 when we won 3-0 thanks to goals by Chivers (2) and Mullery.

Referee Chris Kavanagh takes charge of Spurs for the 19th time in all, and for the fourth time this season. Mr. Kavanagh was in the middle for our first game of the season at Leicester, and was last in charge of Tottenham at home in December when we drew with Wolves. He first refereed Spurs in September 2018 when we won 2-1 at Brighton.
