Make us proud again Spurs!

Frankfurt Stadion (Deutsche Bank Park )

Thanks to Eugene Gasper for the picture

In this wearying, injury-ridden season of 50 games so far, there have been few occasions when Spurs have made us proud. We've endured 21 defeats in all competitions, 17 of which have been in the Premier League. We've had magical away wins against both Manchester sides. We achieved a first Premier League double against Manchester United, and beat them three times in all, thus reaching the League Cup semi-final. It's time for Spurs to make us proud again and take us to an eighth European semi-final since our first venture 63 years ago.

It won't be easy, of course, against an Eintracht Frankfurt side which is in good form and who tested us to the full in last week's first leg. Eintracht played third from bottom club Heidenheim at home on Sunday and won 3-0 with goals by Bahoya, Koch and current top-scorer Ekitike. A 57,500 crowd filled the Deutsche Bank Park Frankfurt Stadion.

The Eintracht back five was unchanged from that which played Spurs last week. Hojlund replaced Larsson in midfield. Uzun started in place of Gotze and Chaibi played instead of Brown.

When we drew 0-0 at Frankfurt in October 2022, the crowd was 50,500. Both sides have changed considerably since then...only two of Frankfurt's 2022 squad featured last week, while 9 Spurs players from 2022 were in our squad.

Frankfurt are yet to lose a Europa League game at home this season. (The same applies to Spurs). The German side have lost just three of their 22 domestic home games, against Mainz (3-1), Bayer Leverkusen (4-1) and most recently against Union Berlin (2-1). They drew 3-3 at home to Bayern Munich early in the season, when Marmoush (now at Man City) scored two of their goals, and they beat Borussia Dortmund at home 2-0 in January.

Spurs have played in Europe in 18 of the 28 seasons covered by Spurs Odyssey since 1997, and reached the quarter-finals in 5 of those seasons, twice in the Champions League. The only time we reached a semi-final in those years was of course in the Champions League six years ago.

In the 2007 UEFA Cup quarter-final, we were knocked out by Sevilla, and in the 2013 Europa League, we lost out to a Basel side which featured a certain Mohamed Salah. The last of our three European trophies was in 1984. However, we can be proud of the fact that this is Tottenham's eighth UEFA Cup/Europa League quarter-final, equalling Liverpool's English record.

There is no question that for some time, Ange Postecoglou's focus has been on success in this tournament. We have almost a fully fit squad available for this game after "Deki" Kulusevski appeared for 15 minutes in Sunday's Wolves game.

It's up to those who represent our club tomorrow (8pm - TNT) to put everything into the game. Hearts, souls and minds must be fully committed. Let's have no dilly-dallying and suicidal play in and around our own penalty area. Let's see inventive play and movement on and off the ball, and concerted attack!

Only if we win game 51 of this gruelling season will the remainder of 2024-25 have meaning. Lose, and we face a second season in three out of Europe, and we face yet another coach and "project Tottenham".

Can we do it? I fear not, but "Come on you Spurs!"

Match referee Davide Massa and his team of officials are from Italy. Signor Massa previously had charge of Spurs when they lost 3-0 away to Dinamo Zagreb in March, 2021. He has had charge of 14 European and International games over the last year.
