Time to win Spurs!

Welcome to N17

Spurs had 60 touches in Leicester City's box during their 1-1 draw on Monday evening - more than any other team managed on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season. They had 15 shots in total and seven were on target. It is not rocket science to say we need to make more of our opportunities!

Everton, who had a shocking start to the season, losing 3-0 at home to Brighton, could be just the right opponents for us to find good scoring form. It is certainly time for us to win with a tricky trip to Newcastle before the International break, and Arsenal coming up the Seven Sisters Road after that first two-week hiatus in our programme.

Last year, Everton lost their opening three games of a league season for the first time since 1990-91, while it was the first time they'd ever lost their opening three such games without scoring a single goal.

Everton's only victory in our past 23 Premier League meetings was 1-0 away in September 2020. Spurs have won 30 games and scored 102 goals against Everton in the Premier League - both club competition records against a single opponent. Our Premier League points per game record against "The Toffees" is 1.8 - the best (by a long chalk) against any of the other four fellow ever-present EPL sides and fifth best against any of this season's opponents.

Everton are proud Football League (1888) and Premier League (1992)founders. They are nine-time league champions, but their last such success was in 1986-87 with legendary player and manager Howard Kendall in charge. Their last trophy was the 1995 FA Cup when they beat us 4-1 in the semi-final at Elland Road, thus ending Jurgen Klinsmann's hopes of an FA Cup success, not to mention thousands of disappointed fans.

Aged 39 years and 39 days, Ashley Young last week became the oldest-ever outfield player to appear for the Toffees in a senior game; previously former Spurs centre-back Richard Gough in a Premier League game against Bradford City on 28 April 2001 (39 years and 23 days). Young was sent off for a professional foul against Brighton and will have to sit out this game.

Against Aston Villa last season, Seamus Coleman made his 355th Premier League appearance for Everton, surpassing Tim Howard as the club's record appearance maker in the competition. Coleman's current total is 364. Spurs leading appearance-maker in Premier League games remains Hugo Lloris with 361 such games. Heung-Min Son currently has 304 such appearances for the club.

Seamus Coleman has signed a new deal at Everton valid until June 2025, but did not feature in last week's game.

Jordan Pickford, now aged 30, has made 68 appearances for England, which puts him 5 caps behind Gordon Banks, 7 short of David Seaman and Joe Hart, and 57 behind Peter Shilton. Pickford played every minute of Euro 24 and was arguably England's player of the tournament as he made many vital saves including the first penalty in England's shoot-out win over Switzerland.

Pickford has been Everton's player of the year for the last three years and has now made 280 appearances for "The Toffees". Signed from Sunderland in July 2017, only seven of Pickford's appearances have been in the FA Cup.

Lee Carsley, England's interim head coach, played for Everton between February 2002 and May 2008. Carsley made more appearances for "The Toffees" (198) than for any other club, which included Derby, Blackburn, Birmingham and Coventry.

Dele Alli is a free agent after his Everton contract expired at the end of last season but continues to train with the club as he recovers from surgery on a persistent groin injury. The 28-year-old started only one game in two and a half seasons as an Everton player and has not played a competitive match in 18 months, after suffering a hip injury while on loan at Besiktas.

Everton manager Sean Dyche has won only two of his 20 matches as a manager against Spurs in all competitions (D6, L12). Both victories were in the league with Burnley at Turf Moor: 2-1 on 23 February 2019 and 1-0 on 23 February 2022.

Last season Richarlison became the first former Everton player to score home and away against the Toffees in the same Premier League campaign. Dominic Solanke will miss Saturday's game (kick-off 3pm), due to an ankle injury. Rodrigo Bentancur is recovering well after his head injury scare in Monday night's game, but will sit out the game, as the club are following concussion protocol. Yves Bissouma has served the club's one-match suspension and is available. Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall are likely to feature again, but I imagine Sarr will partner Bissouma in front of the defence.

Pedro Porro is fit, despite a knock suffered at Leicester. Our latest signing Wilson Odobert has trained this week and will perhaps be included on the Spurs bench. Ange certainly has plenty of options for his front four. We could see Richarlison leading the line, or Kulusevski operating as a "false nine" as he did in the pre-season programme.

Everton lost Amadou Onana for £50 million to Aston Villa in the summer. Onana scored on his debut away to West Ham last week. Jack Harrison is still contracted to Leeds, but has stayed with Everton for a second loan season. "The Toffees" signed Aston Villa midfielder Tim Iroegbunam for a fee of around £9 million, former Sheffield United midfielder Iliman Ndiaye from Marseille, and 23-year-old centre-back Jake O'Brien from Lyon, but there have been no marquee signings. Cash-strapped Everton had to fight off approaches for 22-year-old centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, and whilst the window remains open, perhaps that has been their best business.

Everton also signed Danish International midfielder Jesper Lindstrom from Napoli. It's a loan deal with a buy option.

My prediction for the game is a 3-0 home win with a home debut goal for Solanke!

Kevin Campbell, who died in June aged only 54, was born in Lambeth and began his career with Arsenal winning a Championship medal in 1991, along with League Cup and FA Cup winners' medals with them in 1993. He also won a Cup-Winners' cup medal with Arsenal in 1994.

After spells with Nottingham Forest and Trabzonspor, Campbell joined Everton for whom he made 164 appearances between 1999 and 2005. Campbell was proud to have been Everton's first black captain. He also almost singlehandedly saved the team from relegation at the end of the 1998-99 season with nine goals in his first eight starts.

In recent years, Campbell occasionally appeared on TV coverage "representing" Everton.

Anthony Taylor referees Spurs for the 46th time tomorrow. His first Spurs game was 14 years ago in December 2010 when we beat Newcastle 2-0. I described Mr Taylor then as "relatively inexperienced in the Premier League, and in my view it showed, as he was soft on the cynical and tough Newcastle team which included Joey Barton and Alan Smith."

Last week Mr. Taylor took charge of Chelsea's home defeat to Manchester City. He refereed three games in this summer's Euro 24 tournament.

Did you know? - Bill Nicholson's last game as a player was against Everton at White Hart Lane 70 years ago on 4th December, 1954. Everton, who had been promoted that year (their last promotion) won 3-1. Bill's first game as the manager of Spurs famously came against Everton on 11th October 1958 when we won 10-4!
