Yet another absentee from Spurs' FA cup squad
Thanks to Andy Park for this picture
After our drubbing at Anfield on Thursday night, Spurs travel to Villa Park for a difficult FA Cup fourth round tie (5.35pm - BBC) with yet another player absent from the squad which travelled to Liverpool.
Richarlison hobbled off just before half-time and his next absence (there have been too many in the two and a half years since he was signed) is due to a calf injury.
The list of Spurs absentees (in addition to Richarlison) reads as follows:-
Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Guglielmo Vicario, Radu Dragusin, Destiny Udogie, James Maddison, Wilson Odobert, Timo Werner, Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson. Dane Scarlett is cup-tied - as he was on Thursday night in the Carabao Cup - after playing in the FA Cup for Oxford United during his loan spell there.
We are told that Vicario, Van de Ven, Udogie, Maddison, Johnson and even Odobert
could be returning in time for next week's Premier League crunch game at home to Manchester, but by then we could be out of yet another cup competition. Postecoglou's "second season trophy" might be reliant upon Europa League progress.
Both clubs have had to make tough decisions regarding new additions to their European squads. Villa are through to the last 16 of the Champions League and like Spurs can watch the play-off rounds at home.
Unai Emery was busy in the transfer window. Scorer of 12 Villa goals this season Jhon Duran left for big money and has already played next to Cristiano Ronaldo (now aged 40) at Al-Nassr. Tyrone Mings has re-joined Pau Torres on the injured list and Diego Carlos left for Fenerbahce. Chelsea centre-back Axel Disasi has joined Villa on loan, but he is cup-tied.
Another loan signing - Marcus Rashford - has had a lot of publicity and has joined with a buy option. 27-year-old Rashford is not cup-tied and could make his debut tomorrow. Ollie Watkins was taken off in last week's defeat at Wolves and is not likely to feature tomorrow.
Villa's other January signings were former Arsenal academy forward Donyell Malen, signed from Borussia Dortmund, 22-year-old defender Andres Garcia from Levante (taken off at half-time last week at Molineux), and PSG loanee midfielder Marco Asensio.
Garcia and Malen have missed out on selection for Villa's Champions League campaign, so we might see both tomorrow. Spurs fans will be pleased to know that
Matty Cash is also on Villa's injured list. In the past, Cash has caused injuries to our players.
Spurs have added Kevin Danso, Mathys Tel and Djed Spence to their European squad at the expense of Forster, Dragusin (injured) and Werner. Spence has impressed when given the chance, and was unfortunate to have missed out on Europe in the league phase. Antonin Kinsky misses out on Europa League inclusion, and I'd be happy to see Brandon Austin play tomorrow.
Richarlison's absence probably means a first start for Mathys Tel, who, if he plays in the middle deserves more service than he was offered at Anfield. I hope to see Bergvall start tomorrow too. Danso will make his second start in a team which cannot change much.
Despite Villa's inconsistency in recent Premier League games (lost at Molineux, and drew at home to West Ham), this is going to be yet anther tough game and one which I approach with little hope of victory. There is no VAR and we face extra-time and penalties in the event of a draw.
The draw for the fifth round takes place during BBC's "One Show" at 7pm on Monday evening. Let's hope we're in it!
Anthony Taylor referees Spurs for the 48th time tomorrow. His previous games with us this season were the 4-0 home win against Everton and the 4-3 defeat to Chelsea. The only time Mr Taylor has refereed a Villa v Spurs game was in March 2016 when we won 2-0 "at a canter". Those were the days!
Spurs legend Cliff Jones, who celebrated his 90th birthday yesterday (Friday) scored in three of the cup ties listed above. Cliff scored four goals in our run to the 1961 Double win, one of which was the 2-0 away win against Villa. The week before we had beaten Villa away in the League.
In his Double series, Brian Judson wrote of the league win in February 1961, "In winning this match, Spurs became the fastest side to reach 50 points under the old 2 points for a win system.
A week later, Spurs returned to Villa Park for the 5th Round of the FA Cup. Over 69,000 spectators crammed into the ground but the Villa fans had little to cheer about. In the thirty minutes before half-time, Spurs attained standards so high no one could have lived with them that day. Spurs passed the ball around so fast and so quickly the Villa players must have become dizzy. In the 18th minute, White began the move down the left wing that, five passes later, ended with Jones smashing a vicious shot towards Sidebottom's goal but the ball struck Neal and flew high into the roof of the net. Shortly after the half-hour, the ball ran from Dyson to White, on to Smith and then to Allen. Allen provided the pass that enabled Jones to fire in a shot that was absolutely unstoppable. Thereafter, Spurs simply toyed with Villa, knowing there was no way back for the hosts, who had been bludgeoned into defeat by Spurs' rapier like skills."
The following year, Cliff scored in a quarter-final home win at White Hart Lane. Cliff's last Spurs games were played at the start of the 1968/69 season when he scored 6 goals in 9 games before moving to Fulham. One of those goals came in a 4-1 away win in the League Cup against Villa.
Did you know? - Spurs and Villa have met only 3 times in cup competitions in the Premier League era.
When we played 8 years ago in Round 3 in January, 2017, we were on our way to finishing runners-up in the Premier League and an FA Cup semi-final. Both our scorers (Ben Davies and Son Heung-min) are likely to start tomorrow. Steve Bruce's Aston Villa were in the Championship for the first of three seasons before they returned to the top flight.
Mile Jedinak (now a member of Ange Postecoglou's coaching staff), was in the Villa side, which also included former Spurs man Alan Hutton. Hutton was a member of our 2008 League Cup winning side.
