Spurs to be "bridesmaids" again
Thanks to Eugene Gasper for this picture
Liverpool connections became Arsenal fans on Wednesday night, hoping that the Premier League runners-up elect did not lose to Crystal Palace, so that the Anfield crowd could celebrate their second title win, rather than have it handed to them due to Arsenal's failure.
The Liverpool team and fans got their wish when Arsenal managed a draw, meaning "The Reds" will secure the title with a point. Spurs will be the fodder for the surely inevitable home success which will give the Anfield side their first Premier League title win in front of their fans. When Liverpool won their first Premier League title in 2019/20, no fans were allowed to be present due to Covid restrictions. The trophy was presented on 22nd July 2020, after a 5-3 home win against Chelsea, but Liverpool had secured the title weeks before. This will be Liverpool's 20th top flight title win.
Whilst I should not suggest that defeat for Spurs is inevitable, we have been "bridesmaids" on too many occasions in the past, and with regard to Liverpool, the 2019 Champions League Final, 1982 League Cup Final, and Charity Shield of the same year come to mind. Liverpool remain one of three Premier League sides against whom we have a record of gaining less than one point per game.
Liverpool have lost just two Premier League games this season. Their first defeat was by 1-0 at home to our last opponents - Nottingham Forest. The other was just three weeks ago at Craven Cottage.
My first visit to Anfield was for the penultimate game of the 1992/93 season when we were beaten 6-2. Ian Rush opened the scoring with the first of two personal goals. The first was his 300th competitive goal for Liverpool. Neil Ruddock was in the Spurs side, but joined Liverpool that summer.
When we next played Liverpool at Anfield in August 1993, we won 2-1! Neil Ruddock was on the losing side again. All the goals were scored in the first half. Nigel Clough opened in the 18th minute, but Teddy Sheringham scored twice. The first of his goals was a penalty. Teddy's last goal for Nottingham Forest the previous year had also been against Liverpool in a 1-0 win at The City Ground.
We have won on just two of our last 37 league visits to Anfield, most recently in May 2011, when Rafa van der Vaart and Luka Modric (pen) scored our goals.
Last month saw the fortieth anniversary of an historic away win for Spurs at Anfield. Those old enough will remember the statistic about Spurs not having won at Anfield since the sinking of The Titanic in April 1912. Spurs won in March that year. In March 1985, Garth Crooks scored the goal which brought a 73 year run to an end. Ray Clemence was in the Spurs goal, and the Liverpool side included the likes of Grobbelaar, Hansen, Dalglish, Whelan and Rush.
In our December home game Mo Salah became the first player ever in the Premier League to achieve double figures in both goals and assists before Christmas. He also became the fourth-highest goalscorer in Liverpool's history.
In February, Salah became the first player in Premier League history to be involved in 40+ goals in two different seasons:-
42 in 2017/18 (32 goals, 10 assists)
40 in 2024/25 (25 goals, 15 assists).
Currently Salah has scored 243 goals and provided 109 assists for Liverpool in 394 appearances. Salah has scored 32 goals in all competitions this season but he hasn't scored in his last six club games.
Liverpool fans were of course happy when the news was announced two weeks ago that Salah had signed a new two-year contract. Van Dijk soon followed, but there is no news as yet regarding Trent Alexander-Arnold whose contract expires this summer. Rumour still has it that Trent is destined for Real Madrid.
Liverpool's official capacity since the upgrade to the Anfield Road Stand is now 61,276. All their domestic home games this season have exceeded 60,000.
Sunday's game kicks off at 4.30pm and is being televised by SKY at the same time as Nottingham Forest and Manchester City meet in the weekend's second FA Cup semi-final. You'll remember that Liverpool lost to Newcastle in last month's League Cup Final. Championship strugglers Plymouth knocked a weakened Liverpool team out of the FA Cup, and they were knocked out in the Champions League Round of 16 on penalties at Anfield by PSG. Liverpool will be back to fight another Champions League day next season. Spurs hope to reach the same competition by winning the Europa League and will have their minds on next week's semi-final against Bodo/Glimt. Son will be missing again this weekend.
Did you know? - Dennis Bond, who died aged 77 last month, made his Spurs debut as substitute for Dave Mackay in a 2-1 home win over Liverpool on April 1st, 1967. Jimmy Greaves scored both our goals. Highlights of that game can be viewed here on YouTube.
Referee Tom Bramall will be in charge of Spurs for only the second time, having previously officiated our 1-0 FA Cup Third Round win over Portsmouth in January 2023. Mr Bramall was born in Sheffield (!) in 1990 and was appointed to the Select group One group of referees in 2022. He has refereed 8 previous Premier League games this season, none of which have involved Liverpool or Spurs.
