Santa is not the only one flying this Christmas!

Father Christmas is a Spurs fan!

Our guests for Sunday's pre-Christmas fare are our League Cup semi-final opponents Liverpool. Santa is not the only one flying over the festive season because Liverpool are top of the Premier League table and also sit top of the Champions League table with maximum points. Arne Slot's men have already secured their place in the knock-out stages of the premier European competition. Carabao Cup holders Liverpool are the first team to win the competition 10 times.

Sunday's game is live on Sky and kicks off at 4.30pm and should offer entertainment if not the result Spurs fans seek.

With a weakened side Liverpool beat Southampton 2-1 on Wednesday night, and that form should not be compared to Spurs' 5-0 massacre last week. However, the "Saints" did restrict Liverpool to a 3-2 scoreline in November's Premier League meeting when "The Reds" did field a strong side.

On that November occasion Mo Salah scored twice. Salah and Haaland lead the Premier League score chart with 13 goals. The Egyptian international, yet to agree a contract beyond next summer, has amassed 168 Premier League goals for Liverpool plus two scored for Chelsea over 10 years ago. Salah sits in eighth place in the all-time Premier League goalscorers' list and should overtake Thierry Henry and Frank Lampard this season. He has scored 227 goals in all for his club.

Last season Mohamed Salah became the first Premier League player to score 10 or more goals and provide 10 or more assists in three consecutive seasons. He needs one more assist to make that record read four consecutive seasons.

Last season's home game was memorable, not just because we won thanks to Joel Matip's late own goal from a powerful cross by Pedro Porro, but particularly for the controversy involving referee Simon Hooper and VAR over Luis Diaz's good goal being disallowed.

This was the first time Liverpool had two players sent-off in a game since a 4-0 loss at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on 18 September 2011 (Charlie Adam and Martin Skrtel).

Our September win last year was our first win over Liverpool since a 4-1 at Wembley in October 2017, and our first at Tottenham since November 2012.

This fixture has become the highest-scoring in Premier League history with a cumulative total of 191 goals over 64 games, an average of 2.98 goals per match.

Son has scored in each of his last five league appearances versus Liverpool. The only other player to have netted in five consecutive Premier League matches against the Reds is Leicester's Jamie Vardy between 2016 and 2017.

Arne Slot was effectively formally announced as his replacement by Jurgen Klopp in his speech in the Anfield Stadium after his emotional farewell game against Wolves. The 45-year-old former Feyenoord coach signed a three-year contract at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp has accepted his first job since leaving Liverpool and will take on the role of global head of soccer at Red Bull from January 1, much to the consternation of many of his former fans in Germany.

Liverpool's Joey Gomez was one of five players in England's 26-man Euro 24 squad who had no game time. The others were goalkeepers Aaron Ramsdale, Dean Henderson and outfield players Lewis Dunk along with Adam Wharton.

In August, Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez was handed a five-game international ban for his role in the disorder that took place at the end of Uruguay's Copa America semi-final against Colombia in July. In Nunez's case, the ban was put on hold in October, pending arbitration. Rodrigo Bentancur was also given a four-match International ban. Neither ban affected club matches. Sunday's game will be the last of Bentancur's 7-game domestic ban. He can at least look forward to Boxing Day at Nottingham Forest.

Two notable former Liverpool players have passed away since the start of this season:-

Ron Yeats, who died aged 86 in September, was described as a "Colossus" by legendary manager Bill Shankly, who built his team around the Scottish centre half. Yeats was the inspirational club captain of whom Shankly said, "With Ron at the back, we can play Arthur Askey in goal". Yeats also worked as chief scout for Kenny Dalgleish, and only retired from his scouting role in 2006. Yeats made 464 appearances for Liverpool between 1961 and 1971. Liverpool won two league championship titles in 1963-64 and 1965-66 and Yeats became the first captain in the club's history to lift the FA Cup in 1965.

Peter Cormack, who died aged 78 in October, signed for Liverpool from Nottingham Forest in July 1972. In his first season he helped Liverpool win their eighth league title and their first European trophy. This was the 1973 UEFA Cup. Liverpool beat Spurs on away goals in the two-legged semi-final. Cormack played in the home match, won 1-0 by Liverpool. Spurs won 2-1 at home, thanks to two goals by Martin Peters. Cormack missed that game, but played in the final, which Liverpool won 3-2 on aggregate against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Did you know? - Former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, now aged 42, moved on a free transfer in the summer from Villarreal to Como, who last season were promoted after finishing runners-up in Serie B. Reina's last game for Liverpool was in May 2013. He spent part of the 2019/20 season on loan to Aston Villa. Reina played in Como's 2-0 victory over Roma last Sunday. Former Spur Dele Alli is going to train with Cesc Fabregas's Como in the New Year.

Sam Barrott (it is the correct spelling) is in charge of Spurs for just the third time and for the first occasion this season. Mr. Barrott refereed our home games early this year against Burnley (FA Cup) and Brighton. He's been in the middle for 10 EPL games so far this season, including last week's Forest v Villa game. Mr Barrott was also in charge of Wednesday night's Carabao Cup quarter-final at Newcastle.

I hope for a Spurs win and wish all readers a very Happy Christmas and a joyful, healthy 2025!
