A rare Monday night game for Spurs

Welcome to N17

Two teams vying for a place in next season's Champions League meet in this late Easter treat for SKY's MNF fans (KO 8PM). Nuno Espirito Santo's Nottingham Forest, who have had such a great season, went into the weekend in fourth place, but have fallen to fifth following wins for Man City and Chelsea. They will now be desperate to win and reclaim one of the top five spots which this year will ensure qualification for the Blue Riband European club competition.

Forest have six games remaining in their league campaign for Champions League football. For Spurs, the Premier League now takes second place to their Europa League trophy quest which would be complete with an aggregate win over Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt and a win in the potential final against Athletic Bilbao or Manchester United. Whilst Ange Postecoglou will seek to field a competitive side tonight, we all know where Spurs' focus lies.

This will be our 52nd game of the season, and not since Matchday One, back in August, have we featured in the Monday night game. That game, a 1-1 draw at Leicester, is typical of a league campaign where Spurs have badly under-achieved.

That was not the case with Forest, who escaped relegation last season with just 32 points, but were unbeaten in their first six games. They drew four of those games, but one of their two wins was a surprising 1-0 at Anfield which remains Liverpool's one home defeat in the league this season. They'll be looking forward to hosting Spurs on Sunday, when they might secure a second Premier League title!

When they beat Brighton in their FA Cup quarter-final penalty shoot-out (their third consecutive shoot-out), Forest reached their first FA Cup semi-final since 1991, when we won our last FA Cup Final. Since then, Spurs have lost 8 consecutive semi-finals, the last of which was seven years ago. Forest face Manchester City at Wembley next Sunday at the same time as we play Liverpool.

Nuno Espirito Santo won the Manager of the Month award for March, when Forest were unbeaten in League and cup games. You might remember he won the award for winning his first three games with Spurs in August 2021 when we beat Manchester City, Wolves and Watford 1-0. Results soon turned and Nuno was gone after 17 games. He spent a couple of seasons in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad before joining Forest in December 2023.

Chris Wood is one of two players in the Premier League era to top the scoring charts for two clubs. He scored 49 for Burnley and currently has (18) for Forest. The other player is Alan Shearer for Blackburn (112) and Newcastle (148). Harry Kane is the only player to have scored at least 200 goals for a single club in the competition, with the England captain scoring 213 times for Spurs before he departed in 2023 for Bayern Munich.

33-year-old Wood is having his best Premier League season yet with those 18 goals to date.

When Chris Wood scored a hat-trick in Forest's 7-0 defeat over Brighton on 1st February, he became the first Forest player to score a top flight hat-trick since Nigel Clough in 1987! Both hat-tricks included a penalty. Clough's was scored in a 4-0 home win over QPR. Nigel was, of course, being managed by his father Brian. Forest finished third that season (Spurs were 13th).

Forest's win over Brighton was their biggest league win since one by the same score over Chelsea in 1991. That was on April 20th. Less than a month later, we beat Forest in the FA Cup Final!

Taiwo Awoniyi scored in seven consecutive Premier League appearances last season, a record run by a Forest player. He's only the third African player to score in seven consecutive Premier League appearances, after Emmanuel Adebayor and Mohamed Salah. Awoniyi has been Wood's understudy this season.

The last time Forest played in the European Cup competition was in December 1980. They had won the European Cup for a second time in May 1980 against a Hamburg side which included England's Kevin Keegan. The following season, Brian Clough's side were knocked out in the first round by CSKA Sofia, and in December they lost the European Super Cup on away goals to Valencia who included Argentine World Cup star Mario Kempes. Forest were also beaten (1-0) by Nacional in the World Club Championship Final held in Tokyo in February 1981.

Two other Argentine World Cup players - Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa - played in the Spurs side that achieved a league double over Forest in 1980/81. Spurs won 2-0 at home in August and 3-0 away in November, 1980. Ossie even scored one of our goals in the away game for good measure!

This season Nuno Espirito Santo's side made it six Premier League wins in a row for the first time since 1996/97 after a 3-0 away win at Wolves on 6th January.

Forest guaranteed their finish above Spurs when beating Manchester United on 1st April. More importantly, Forest asserted their claim of a Champions League place, let alone their first place in Europe for 30 years.

This will be Forest's first top half finish in the Premier League since 1995/6 when Spurs were eighth to Forest's ninth. Forest will finish above Spurs for the first time since 1994/5 when (under Frank Clarke) they finished third. Hence Forest last played in Europe (UEFA Cup) 30 years ago in 1995/6. They were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Bayern Munich.

I'm not sure this game will be a treat for Spurs fans, who will nonetheless be in good spirits after Thursday night's win in Germany. My head tells me Forest will win the game, but my heart tells me to hope for a scoring draw, or perhaps even a win. Son will still not be available and the team will no doubt see several changes from that which beat Frankfurt. James Maddison might also be absent.

Kevin Campbell, who died in June 2024, aged only 54, played for Nottingham Forest between 1995 and 1998. Campbell had his highest scoring league season with Forest, helping them to win promotion back to the Premier League. He scored 23 goals in 42 league appearances. Two of those goals were at home and away against Manchester City, who were relegated to the third tier that season.

Did you know? - Gary Mabbutt scored at home and away against Nottingham Forest in his first season with Spurs in 1982/3. Gary scored twice in the home game played in September 1982 which we won 4-1. We drew the away game 2-2, thanks to goals by "Mabbsy" and Alan Brazil, who had signed in March '83. Gary Mabbutt scored 10 goals in that first season with Spurs - more than in any of his following 15 seasons. The Forest side in that 4-1 game included future Spurs Chris Fairclough and Steve Hodge and past Spur Willie Young.

Peter Bankes referees Spurs for a 13th time. His last game with us was the 1-0 home win against Manchester United in February. That was our last Premier League clean sheet - 8 games ago.
