London Derby wooden spoon battle

West Ham - 02.04.24

Thanks to Eugene Gasper for the picture

After the success of their first leg semi-final on Thursday night, Spurs travel to The (rented) London Stadium to play 17th-placed West Ham (2pm Sunday - not on UK TV) in a match which could decide who gets the wooden spoon in this season's London Derby table. If West Ham win they would overtake us in the Premier League table and potentially ensure that we end the season as the worst Premier League side with the exception of those already relegated. Spurs have fewer points in London derbies this season than any of their neighbours.

You can quote all the mitigating circumstances you like with regard to Spurs' injury-plagued season, but these are two of the worst sides on current form. West Ham are without a win in their last seven, since they beat relegated Leicester. Spurs have managed just one win in their last six games, and that was over bottom club Southampton.

As always, West Ham will be determined to win their "cup final". Spurs are again nursing injuries after Thursday night's game, and with the second leg of the Europa League semi-final on their minds, Ange Postecoglou will inevitably field a side more similar to that which lost 5-1 at Liverpool, than that which beat Bodo/Glimt 3-1.

West Ham also lost 5-1 at Anfield, earlier in the season when they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup. That was in Round Three, so they've had a short season of 41 games, having been knocked out of the FA Cup at the first time of asking by Aston Villa.

Spurs' 4-1 win over "The Hammers" last October was our biggest win in our meetings since November 2015, when we won by the same scoreline. Our goalscorers were Harry Kane (2), Toby Alderweireld, and Kyle Walker, who scored the last of his 4 league goals for Spurs. Few West Ham fans were left in our stadium by the time the last rites were played out. It was the same situation in October.

Mohammed Kudus, who was sent off in that game after his attack on Micky van de Ven, received a retrospective additional two-game ban and missed five games in all. Kudus, along with Jarrod Bowen, remain West Ham's biggest threats.

Our biggest ever win over West Ham took place at Upton Park in August, 1962. The score was 6-1 and the opening goal was an own goal by future manager John Lyall. Terry Medwin, Jimmy Greaves (2), Cliff Jones and John White completed our scoring. The West Ham side included 18-year-old future Spur Martin Peters and the legendary Bobby Moore.

Former Brighton and Chelsea manager Graham Potter was appointed in January as West Ham's new coach after the sacking of Julen Lopetegui, who had just seven months in charge as manager. West Ham have now taken just 13 points from Potter's 14 games. Last week, after leading 2-1 at Brighton, "The Hammers" conceded two late goals to lose. In recent weeks they conceded in the 91st minute against Everton, the 89th minute against Liverpool and the 93rd minute against Southampton to drop points.

Only West Ham United throwing away a late lead against Brighton & Hove Albion prevented Spurs from dropping to 17th in the table last weekend.

West Ham have finished in the top six of the Premier League just once this century and twice in all. Spurs have managed 15 top six finishes in the Premier League, all of which have been since the turn of this century.

Spurs have gone four matches without an away league win at West Ham, their longest run since six winless matches at Upton Park between 1995 and 2001.

Michail Antonio has scored six Premier League goals against Spurs, his highest tally against any club. Antonio, now aged 35, is on the long road to recovery following his horrific car crash last December.

I have made a highly optimistic prediction of a 2-1 Spurs victory, but I do fear the opposite will happen.

Michael Oliver will be refereeing his 51st Spurs game, but surprisingly it will be his first game in the middle with us since April last year. Mr. Oliver is kept busy across England and Europe. Last month he had charge of Bodo/Glimt's 2-0 home win over Lazio. Mr Oliver has refereed three previous matches between Spurs and West Ham, each of which we've won!

Ronnie Boyce, who died in February this year, aged 82, was a one-club man who made 341 appearances for West Ham between October 1960 and December 1972. Born just a short distance from The Boleyn Ground, Boyce made his club debut at the age of 17 on 22nd October 1960 against Preston North End. In May 1964, Boyce scored the winning goal in "The Hammers"' 1964 FA Cup Final win, also against Preston North End. A year later, Boyce was in the team which emulated Spurs by winning the European Cup-Winners' Cup. That team included the famed England World Cup triumvirate of Moore, Hurst and Peters.

Did you know?- Constable Trevor Lock, who died on March 30th, aged 85 was the unassuming hero of the Iranian embassy siege of April 1980. Trevor was born in East London and raised in Barking. He idolised West Ham.
