Spoiler alert!
Another International break ends (there is still one more this year) and Spurs have been selected to kick-off the restart of the Premier League. Our game is at 12.30pm on Saturday, being televised by TNT Sports here in the UK.
Whilst we would love a win to boost our morale after the awful away defeat to Brighton, I have bad news for you all. It's a spoiler alert, so look away now if you don't want to know that West Ham have a nasty habit of ruining home meetings. They beat us here last year for the sixth time in 28 Premier League meetings.
The previous West Ham victory on our turf was in April 2019 when they became the first team to score and win at our shiny new stadium. How they laughed, and how we cried.
Spurs Odyssey regular columnist and veteran journalist and author Norman Giller, together with Spurs legend Steve Perryman have written a book, aptly entitled "Sir Bill" about the great Bill Nicholson. Next Wednesday (23rd October) will be the twentieth anniversary of Bill's passing. One of the many pictures in the book (published by Vision Sports Publishing ISBN 9781913412692) was taken on 24th April, 1999 at the naming ceremony of what was Bill Nicholson Way. Bill and many legendary players were present. Our opponents that day were West Ham, and of course they spoilt our day by winning.
We want no such spoiler this Saturday!
Out of Europe for the first time in four seasons, West Ham have yet to travel outside London for a Premier League game this season! (They did have a trip to Liverpool for a 5-1 Carabao Cup defeat last month) Having played Crystal Palace, Fulham and Brentford in their three away games so far, here they are in yet another London Derby match! "The Hammers" have also played Chelsea at home. This is just the third of our 12 London Derby games this season.
Last season was the first in top-flight history where five London derbies produced a winning margin of at least five goals (Arsenal 5 Chelsea 0; Arsenal 5 Crystal Palace 0; Fulham 5 West Ham 0; West Ham 0 Arsenal 6, Chelsea 5 West Ham 0). As you can see, West Ham feature in those awful statistics three times!
On 6th May with two games still to play, West Ham announced that they had agreed personal terms with Julen Lopetegui (a former Real Madrid and Wolves manager) to replace David Moyes as manager at the end of the season. Lopetegui had left Wolves at the beginning of last season complaining about the lack of funds available for new players.
Julen Lopetegui's appointment was formally announced on 23rd May. Lopetegui became West Ham's first head coach, rather than manager, in line with their sporting director model, suggesting he does not have as much say over signings.
Lopetegui has certainly had a difficult start, and only in their last match did they win a home league game. Perhaps ominously, they found form and beat Ipswich 4-1. "The Hammers'" previous home opponents had been in-form Aston Villa, Man City and Chelsea. Tottenham are now only two points ahead of West Ham, so we need to beware.
James Ward-Prowse, who scored West Ham's winner last year has surprisingly gone on loan to Nottingham Forest. Other departures include centre-backs Ogbonna and Zouma (now at Watford and Al-Orobah respectively), Said Benrahma and Maxwell Cornet.
Signings made since Lopetegui's arrival include his former centre-back at Wolves Max Kilman for £40 million, 18-year-old Brazilian winger Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras, winger Crysendo Summerville from Leeds for £25 million, striker Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund, Argentinian central midfielder Guido Rodriguez on a free after 4 years at Real Betis and former Sheffield United keeper Wes Foderingham.
"The Hammers" also signed midfielder Carlos Soler on loan from PSG, and defender Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice. That means West Ham have now spent around £130 million on new players this summer, although that investment has been balanced out by sales worth in the region of £40 million.
Midfielder Lucas Paqueta is available to play for West Ham United for almost all of this season despite the spot-fixing charges hanging over him. The Brazilian playmaker is facing a ban that could stretch to many years after being charged by the FA with four separate instances of spot-fixing - it is alleged he deliberately got himself booked during four Premier League matches in one of the most serious cases involving a top-flight player in England.
When Jarrod Bowen hit the crossbar three times at Stamford Bridge in May he became the first player to do so in a Premier League game since Jay-Jay Okocha did so for Bolton Wanderers against Tottenham Hotspur in November 2003. Sam Allardyce's Bolton won that game 1-0 to end a run of six unbeaten games for Spurs caretaker manager David Pleat.
When Bowen scored against Liverpool in April, he became the first West Ham player to score 16 goals in a season since Paolo Di Canio in the 1999/20 season. Di Canio scored for Sheffield Wednesday against Spurs in each of the three games he played, but never scored against us for West Ham, or when he played against us with Charlton.
Bowen finished last season with 16 league goals and has two to his name so far this season.
Due to family circumstances this preview is being published earlier than usual. Hopefully all our Internationals will be fit for duty, and the team will perform as they did in the first half at Brighton. Declan Mulcahy's match report will be posted asap, hopefully next Monday, and I hope for a 3-1 home win!
Andy Madley is our match referee for the first time this season. Last season he had charge of our wins at Crystal Palace and Sheffield United. In this calendar year, Mr. Madley has officiated in three away defeats for West Ham (3-0 at Old Trafford, 5-0 at Stamford Bridge and 5-1 at Old Trafford). May the trend continue!
