The heat is on
21-year-old Matthys Tel was both the hero and villain last night in our penultimate home game of the season against Leeds. Firstly, he scored a cracking 20 yard goal in front of the South Stand to give us a 50th minute lead, which, if held, would have given Spurs a four point lead over relegation rivals West Ham. We suffered prolonged agony when Tel performed what turned out to be a reckless overhead clearance in his own area. Play continued, but ultimately VAR intervened and when referee Jarred Gillett was called to the monitor, the inevitable announcement of a penalty followed. Dominic Calvert-Lewin did not fail from the spot
The draw does put us two points ahead of West Ham and we are in control of our destiny with two games left. Should West Ham lose at Newcastle on Sunday (here's hoping) then one point from our last two games would be enough for Spurs. The trouble is the first of those games is at Chelsea next Tuesday. I fear this will go to the last day against Everton, and I do not want to be biting my nails then!
Antonin Kinsky has fully exorcised his nightmare at the Metropolitano and made heroic saves in both the first half and in the 13 minutes of added time. The crowd sang out his name with gusto after the first save.
The pre-match atmosphere was racked up with an interview of Glenn Hoddle, aerial flames and a new TIFO in the South Stand which read "Tottenham Always." Leeds fans happily chanted, "We are staying up!"
West Ham's defeat to Arsenal on Sunday had ensured Leeds' survival, but there was no question of Daniel Farke's side taking the foot off the pedal. Those two saves by Kinsky were more than Darlow had to make in the Leeds goal as Spurs failed to hit the target until that Tel goal.
Leeds kicked off and played towards the South Stand. There was an early threat following a long throw by Ampadu, but a goal kick resulted. Leeds were playing five across the back when defending.
Former Leicester right back James Justin needed treatment. The referee had words with Roberto de Zerbi, who presumably had been upsetting the fourth official with early hysterics.
Richarlison had a header deflected out of play after our first corner, taken by Tel from the left, but the second corner came to nothing. Tel made an almost suicidal pass inside, but the ball was cleared to Kolo Muani. His efforts (as are so often the case) were fruitless.
Leeds won a corner and former Spur Joe Rodon headed towards Kinsky's nearside post. The Spurs keeper dived low to his left and somehow managed to retrieve the ball which had got behind him near that post. It was a great save, heartily applauded by the home crowd.
Bentancur, who was impressive again at the back of midfield, led a Spurs attack which resulted in a long throw by Danso. Richarlison tried an overhead kick, but that was off target. Another Bentancur pass to Tel led to a corner, after which aa Gallagher shot was deflected for another corner.
Darlow collected a shot by Richarlison but was then penalised by the referee for taking too long to release the corner. Spurs thus had another corner, after which another shot by Richarlison was cleared and Pedro Porro's effort was cleared by Struijk. Palhinha had our best chance after Richarlison headed down Tel's cross. Joao beat a defender and made room for a shot but blazed his shot too high when the goal beckoned.
Pedro Porro won and took a corner, but that was headed wide by Bentancur. There was a VAR check in added time for a Leeds penalty after Udogie's challenge on Calvert-Lewin, but the Leeds striker had been offside.
At half-time numerous names and photographs were displayed of those fans and players who had passed away over the last year.
Spurs kicked off the second half and soon there was a delay for treatment to Bijol. It was Bijol who headed out Pedro Porro's corner as far as Tel, lurking just outside the box towards the left. Tel lined up and hit a superb right-footed shot which beat the keeper's outstretched left hand. It was a cracking goal!
Now Struijk needed treatment and he had to be replaced by Bornauw. Muani did deliver after taking a pass from Pedro Porro and getting the better of Struijk's replacement. He delivered a good cross, but Richarlison fired over when he should have scored.
Play continued initially after Tel's overhead clearance led to Ampadu staying on the floor, but when there was a break in play, the dreaded VAR review and Calvert-Lewin penalty removed Spurs' advantage.
Rodon was booked for stopping an advance by Tel unfairly, but Leeds were seeing too much of the ball. Van de Ven needed to make a great tackle to prevent Nmecha's advance on goal.
Spurs "cheerleader" James Maddison was spotted stripping off and the crowd gave great cheers to the man who last played a competitive game on 1st May last year. Maddison replaced Tel.
Thirteen minutes of added time were announced. Sean Longstaff replaced Tanaka. Roberto de Zerbi got an inevitable yellow card for stepping outside his technical area - not the first time! It was Longstaff (fed by Justin) who forced an incredible save by Kinsky, pushing his powerfully driven shot onto the bar and out to safety. Maddison went down in the box under Nmecha's challenge, but VAR decreed "No penalty."
Spurs won more corners but got no reward. The pressure and the heat remains on!
