We might only need one more win

Audere est Facere

It is so nice to see a couple of Ws (for wins!) at the end of our last six-game form guide above. Last week's crucial win at Villa Park not only put us back above West Ham, but was the first time since the start of the season that we had managed two consecutive league wins.

Now home fans will be desperate to see us win a Premier League game in our stadium. The last such win was as long ago as December 6th, when Thomas Frank's Spurs beat his previous team 2-0. Spurs have secured 70.3 per cent of their league points away this season (with two home matches and one away remaining).

Two coaches later, by the time we play this game (Monday night 8pm - SKY), we will know the result of Arsenal's visit to West Ham. Arsenal are chasing their first Premier League title for 22 years. If they do win it would mean Spurs might only need one win to ensure their Premier League survival. With their weak goal difference, "The Hammers" would need to win their last two games (away to Newcastle and home to Leeds) to have any chance of survival, provided Spurs manage one win. (I will update this paragraph after tomorrow's game)

A West Ham defeat on Sunday would finally ensure Leeds' Premier League status, which could affect the effort they put into our game. Leeds will definitely be missing Noah Okafor who has scored four of Leeds' goals in their recent run, including both goals at Old Trafford. Left back Gabriel Gudmundsson will also miss this game.

When Leeds beat Manchester United at Old Trafford on April 13th, they went six points clear of Spurs and the bottom three. It was Leeds' first league win at Old Trafford since 1981. They've since played Wolves and Burnley at home, and won both games convincingly. Top scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored in both of those games, and has 12 league goals to his name. Leeds are unbeaten in their last 6 league games, and have won three of those matches.

When they beat Crystal Palace 4-1 at home on 20th December Dominic Calvert-Lewin became the first Leeds player to score in five successive Premier League appearances since Mark Viduka in August 2003. Calvert-Lewin extended his run to six games in the following match at Sunderland and became the first Leeds player to achieve the feat in the top division since John McCole in the 1959-60 season.

Leeds were relegated at the end of that season. McCole actually scored in seven consecutive games including an FA Cup defeat to second division Aston Villa. Leeds played Spurs at home and away over the Christmas period 1959 and McCole scored twice in each game. Spurs won 4-2 away but lost the return game 4-1.

Spurs' recent advertisement to appoint a psychologist in a bid to improve mentality put me in mind of April 1975. Manager Terry Neill took the squad to the Ponsbourne Hotel at Newgate Street (near Cuffley) and hired well-known hypnotist Romark to speak to the team on the night before we beat Leeds 4-2 in our last game of the season to survive in the top flight. Cyril Knowles must have been sitting in the front row, because he scored two goals in that game! (My wife offered that line!) Martin Chivers and Alfie Conn also scored. Alfie Conn (still regarded as a cult figure by Spurs fans of that era) famously sat on the ball in the centre circle during the game. That game was also played on a Monday night.

Frank Gray (grandfather of Archie), Eddie Gray (brother of Frank and great Uncle to Archie) and Joe Jordan (later to work under Harry Redknapp at Spurs) were all members of that 1975 Leeds team.

Leeds reached the FA Cup semi-finals this year for the first time since 1987, when they lost 3-2 to Coventry after extra time. We know what happened to Coventry after that! Until they beat West Ham in this year's quarter-final (on penalties), the last time Leeds had beaten top flight opposition in the FA Cup was against Spurs (2-1) in 2013 in the fourth round. Chelsea beat them 1-0 on 26th April.

Leeds United have lost ten of their last 12 Premier League games against Tottenham Hotspur (W1 D1), including each of their last five in a row – their longest ever league losing run to Spurs.

Tottenham have won all of their last three league visits to Elland Road and have beaten them away three times running in the league for the very first time.

There is no question Roberto de Zerbi has had a positive effect upon the club since his appointment during the international break. He was unlucky to lose his first game at Sunderland due to a fluked deflected goal, and then to suffer a late equaliser in our home draw against Brighton. He was bullish after that game and said we could win our last five games. Well, we've won the first two and might need only one win.

De Zerbi held a press conference on Thursday and said that Vicario is not yet fit. He also said he hoped Dominic Solanke would be available for the visit to Stamford Bridge on May 19th. I suspect we will see the same starting line-upon Monday night as we did at Villa Park last Sunday. That was certainly a spirited and effective performance. I fancy us to win with endeavour of that nature against Leeds.

Terry Yorath, who died in January, aged 75 is primarily remembered as a Leeds player between 1967 and 1976 (he also played in that April 1975 game), and as a Welsh international player and manager. After three seasons with Coventry, Terry signed for Spurs and made 62 appearances for us between August 1979 and January 1981, playing in the third and fourth rounds of our successful 1981 FA Cup run. He played at home and away against Leeds in the 1979/80 season. Spurs won both those games 2-1.

Did you know? - England World Cup winner Jack Charlton was a one-club player and made a total of 773 appearances for Leeds between April 1953 and April 1973. Jack Charlton died on July 10 2020, aged 85.

Jarred Gillett is the first referee to be in charge of Spurs for the fifth time this season. It is his 15th Spurs game, since we first saw him in 2019.
