The top half beckons if we can win
Thanks to Andy Park for this picture
We've yet to play every other team once with Sunderland to come next Sunday but already we have a quick turnaround against Brentford who we beat at home on 6th December. That was just our second home league win of the season, and our fourth in the calendar year. The win took us briefly back into the top half. Now, after slipping down to 14th, our win at Selhurst Park and last night's (Tuesday's) results put us in 13th place. The top half beckons if we can win a sixth away game of the season in the Premier League.
We've played six of our scheduled 12 London derbies. So far, we've won three and lost three.
"The Bees" are unbeaten since our home game, having drawn at home to Leeds, beaten poor Wolves at Molineux and thrashed out of sorts Bournemouth last Saturday 4-1. Kevin Schade doubled his Premier League tally this season with a hat-trick.
Our win at Selhurst Park on Sunday has boosted morale and a win in this game would take us above Brentford and towards the upper echelon in the Premier League table. First, we must win another tough derby match.
Brentford are still missing Onyeka, whose Nigeria team are doing well in the African Cup of Nations. Ouattara's Burkino Faso play their third qualifier today (New Year's Eve), so he won't be back for this game.
Pape Sarr's Senegal played their third qualifier yesterday and won, so he won't be back just yet. Thomas Frank confirmed yesterday that despite coming off against Palace, Lucas Bergvall should be okay for tomorrow's game. Despite being linked with a move to either Palace or Bournemouth, our Europa League Final goalscorer Brennan Johnson will be available for selection.
Last April, Keith Andrews applied for the manager's job at League Two MK Dons only for former Derby County boss Paul Warne to get the role instead.
In an unexpected turn of events, the former Republic of Ireland midfielder found himself a Premier League manager after Brentford promoted their set-piece coach to head coach following Thomas Frank's departure to Tottenham. Andrews has been doing a good job!
Andrews was the 98th permanent (non-caretaker or interim) managerial appointment by a Premier League club since June 2015, but only the sixth to be a first-time manager.
Of the other five - Mike Phelan (Hull, 2016), Craig Shakespeare (Leicester, 2017), Scott Parker (Fulham, 2019), Mikel Arteta (Arsenal, 2019) and Gary O'Neil (Bournemouth, 2022) - only Parker and Arteta lasted longer than seven months as a permanent manager in that post.
Brentford have only won one of the nine Premier League meetings between the two clubs, and have yet to win at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Spurs completed their first league double last season against the Bees since joining the Football League in 1908.
Brentford have won only three of their 25 matches against Tottenham in all competitions.
Last season's away game on February 2nd finished in a 2-0 win for Spurs, despite missing their top three scorers (Maddison, Johnson and Solanke) and their two first choice centre-backs (Romero and Van de Ven).
Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro, Richarlison, Rodrigo Bentancur and Kevin Danso need to avoid being booked in this game, otherwise they will have to serve a one-match suspension. Cristian Romero will be available, but Xavi Simons has two further matches to serve under his three-match suspension. Don't forget also that Romero is at risk of an additional ban, having been charged regarding his aggressive behaviour following his sending-off against Liverpool.
I optimistically, and correctly predicted a win at Palace and I'm going for a 2-1 Spurs win here!
Did you know? - John Docherty, who died in December 2024 aged 84 had three spells as a player with Brentford, and twice returned in managerial roles. Docherty played and managed in all four divisions between 1960 and 1997. He managed Brentford between January 1975 and September 1976 when they were in the old fourth division.
Docherty was famous for taking Millwall to their highest ever league standing in the 1988/89 season, having succeeded George Graham in 1986. Teddy Sheringham's career began at Millwall, and with Docherty in charge, helped them to win the Division Two title and to enter the top flight.
Docherty was inducted into Brentford's Hall of Fame in November 2024, though a family statement following his death said his "best memories were at Millwall".
Andy Madley will referee this game. It will be his twelfth Spurs game. Mr. Madley refereed our 3-0 League Cup win over Doncaster this season.
Happy New Year to all readers!
