Hoping for Grade A Spurs against "The Bees"

Welcome to N17

Thomas Frank welcomes his former team to The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for his first meeting with "The Bees" as opposition coach. Keith Andrews was appointed by Brentford as their new head coach on a three-year contract, after Frank's departure last summer. Andrews had worked under Frank as set-piece coach.

This will be only our fourth Saturday 3pm kick-off of the season and our first since Brighton (away) on 20th September. Last season, just 136 out of the 380 Premier League games kicked off at the one-time traditional time. (35.7 per cent).

Last season we had just three Saturday 3pm kick-offs, one of which was the Brentford home game played on September 21st. Inevitably (Thomas Frank's Brentford had a habit of scoring early goals), Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring in the first minute. Dominic Solanke replied with his first Spurs goal seven minutes later before Johnson made it 2-1. James Maddison added a late third goal in the second half.

Personnel have changed, of course. Two of our scorers will not be available and Mbeumo moved to Old Trafford for big money.

Last season there were 27 goals and assists for Bryan Mbeumo and 23 for Yoane Wissa, both of whom have left. The injured Wissa has yet to make his competitive debut for Newcastle.

Brentford have a new goal-scoring star in Igor Thiago, who was recruited from Club Brugge in the summer of 2024 as a replacement for Ivan Toney, who went to Saudi Arabia. The Brazilian striker suffered a meniscus injury during a pre-season friendly and played little part last season, but he has scored 11 Premier League goals (including 5 penalties)so far this season. Thiago is now 24 years old.

Spurs are just one of the clubs allegedly interested in signing Thiago in January and/or bringing Toney back from Saudi Arabia. This is all pure speculation.

Brentford are in a run of games where they win at home (both Liverpool and Newcastle have been recent victims), but lose away. On Wednesday night they lost 2-0 away to Arsenal, with the second goal only coming in added time. We must hope Brentford's trend to lose away continues and that we can at last win at home and climb back into the top half. We need to see Grade A Tottenham against "The Bees!"

No doubt Thomas Frank will ring the changes. Micky van de Ven will surely return, and I fancy Joao Palhinha will return. Palhinha is still the top tackler in the Premier League. Djed Spence has also sat out our last two games, and must be due a start.

In summer, Brentford completed the signing of England midfielder and former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson on a two-year contract after his recent departure from Ajax.

Henderson, 35, spent 12 years with Liverpool, where he won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, Community Shield, Super Cup and Club World Cup.

In July 2023, he joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, managed by former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard, but six months later his contract was cancelled and he joined Ajax. The Dutch club agreed to end Henderson's contract a year early.

Brentford also splashed the cash for Bournemouth's Dango Ouattara, who scored his first club goal in the win against Burnley. "The Bees"' goalkeeper now is former Liverpool number two keeper Caoimhin Kelleher. Mark Flekken left for Bayer Leverkusen.

I'm hoping for a home win , and will guess at a 2-1 scoreline.

Rob Jones referees Spurs for the first time this season and for the twelfth time in all. Two years ago, he refereed our opening game of the 23-24 season at Brentford, when we drew 2-2. Cristian Romero scored his first Spurs goal in that game. Our other scorer was Emerson Royal, who is now playing back in Brazil.

Did you know? - Brentford's game last week against Burnley was goalless after 80 minutes and finished 3-1. It was the first time in Premier League history for as many goals to be scored after 80 minutes.
