Will there be festivities for Spurs at "The Palace"?

Crystal Palace v Spurs, 27.10.24

Thanks to Eugene Gasper for the picture

For the second time in three seasons, thanks to the TV Moguls Spurs have to wait till 28th December for their "Boxing Day" game. Two years ago, we lost 4-2 at Brighton on the same date. Last year we lost 1-0 on Boxing Day at The City Ground, Nottingham. Will there be festivities for Spurs at "The Palace" on Sunday at 4.30pm (SKY TV)? I doubt it.

The last time we went to Selhurst Park in October 2024, "The Eagles" beat us for the first time in 6 meetings, and achieved their first league win of the season. Palace also achieved their first league double over Spurs, beating us 2-0 last May.

This season Palace were the last Premier League team to be beaten, when they lost their seventh game at Everton on 5th October. Palace have had a busy time over the last week or so, and to avoid even worse fixture congestion, their Carabao Cup quarter-final away to Arsenal was delayed until Tuesday, when they lost a penalty shoot-out 8-7.

Palace's unusual situation had been caused by success, of course. They won their first major trophy last season, beating Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup Final. "The Eagles" had previously lost both the 1990 and 2016 FA Cup Finals to Manchester United. Palace's goal was scored by Ebere Eze in similar style to one they scored against Spurs the week before when wing-man Daniel Munoz provided the vital cross. Having been coveted by Spurs, Eze upset us with his summer move to Arsenal.

Palace enhanced their achievement with a penalty shoot-out win in the Community Shield against big-spending Liverpool. This was Palace's first Charity/Community Shield game, whereas Liverpool were playing their 25th such game.

Last season Palace surpassed 50 points for the first time since the 1991-92 campaign, when they reached 57 points. Their final total was 53 points - their highest in the Premier League.

Palace were relegated from the Europa League place they won for the FA Cup victory to the Conference League. Businessman John Textor's interest in both Palace and Lyon broke Uefa rules, so Nottingham Forest took the Europa League place. Oliver Glasner rotated his team heavily for last week's European game and after finishing 10th in that table they face a play-off round in the New Year. The conference league play just 6 games in the league phase.

Glasner has proved his ability as an excellent coach and having won that trophy, Palace continue to thrive despite the loss of Eze, and (last year) Michael Olise to Bayern Munich.

Jean-Phillippe Mateta is a strong and powerful striker and top scores with 7 league goals, three of which were scored in a 3-3 draw at Bournemouth. 21-year-old midfielder Adam Wharton has won England senior recognition this year and is contending for a place in Tuchel's World Cup squad. A major absence for Palace is Colombian wing-back Daniel Munoz, who has undergone knee surgery and will be out till next month. Ismaila Sarr is on International duty with Senegal.

Spurs collected just 11 points in 12 top-flight derbies last season, the fewest of any London side. We lost seven of their 12 derby fixtures (W3, D2). We've won two and lost three of our local derby games so far this season.

Both Romero and Xavi Simons have to miss this game, following their red cards against Liverpool. Romero should be back for the New Year's Day trip to Brentford, although he has now been charged by the FA regarding his failure to leave the pitch promptly when sent off, and for over-aggressive behaviour. Romero has until January 2nd to respond, but it looks like he'll face an additional suspension.

Xavi has to serve a three-match suspension. I imagine Kevin Danso will take Romero's place and Lucas Bergvall will play in Xavi's position.

Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro, Richarlison, and Rodrigo Bentancur need to avoid being booked in this game, or that against Brentford, otherwise they will have to serve a one-match suspension.

Here's my cheeky optimistic prediction - Spurs to win 2-1! Whatever might happen, I wish all readers a very Happy Christmas!

Did you know? - Mark Lazarus, who died in July, played 9 times for Stan Cullis's Wolves in 1961, scoring three goals. He didn't get on with the "regimental" Cullis, and was signed for the second time by QPR. In his third spell with QPR (managed by Alec Stock), Lazarus scored the winning goal in a 3-2 League Cup Final win over West Brom. That QPR team included Rodney Marsh and future Spur Roger Morgan. In December 1967, Lazarus signed for Crystal Palace and would help them gain football in the top flight in his second season.

Jarred Gillett is our match referee. This will be his 14th Spurs game. Previously this season, he oversaw our win at West Ham and home defeat to Chelsea. Two years ago on this date, Mr. Gillett was in charge when we lost at Brighton.
