Spurs seek their 100th Premier League point against West Ham
West Ham's 2-1 defeat at home to fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest was an absolute disaster. It left "The Hammers" in 18th place on just 14 points, seven points behind 17th-placed Forest.
In one of the ultimate ironies of this season, Nuno Espirito Santo was the losing coach in both league games between the two sides, as he was in charge of Forest when Graham Potter's "Hammers" achieved their only away league win back in August.
A wonderful stat by Opta Joe pointed out that in the last two seasons, the only two times that the team in 20th position have led by 3+ goals in a Premier League match have both been against Nuno EspĂrito Santo. Those games were West Ham's 3-0 win and their December defeat to Wolves, who doubled their meagre points tally at a stroke.
"The Hammers" are skating on than ice and have to face the prospect of a third relegation from the Premier League after a 14-season stay which is their longest at this level.
Historically, West Ham have spent six spells in the second tier, the longest of which was between 1932 and 1958. Let's not count chickens though as they've escaped the drop before, most memorably after we beat them 4-3 in a dramatic game at Upton Park in March 2007 when we thought they were doomed.
We must beware as "The Hammers" pay a visit to "Doctor Tottenham" who have been beaten plenty of times at the mis-named Fortress Tottenham. We've been beaten 50 times in 175 games and the East London fans won't let you forget they were the first to beat us here in April 2019. They also won here in December 2023 which is their only league win against Spurs in our last eight Premier League meetings.
A home win would give us our 100th Premier League point against "The Hammers" in our sixtieth such meeting. We've reached this figure against only Everton before, but currently have 98 points against Manchester City.
When we won this season's away game 3-0 in September, it was our first victory at The London Stadium since Jose Mourinho's first game in charge in November 2019. Frank became only the third Spurs manager to win his first two away Premier League games - after Ossie Ardiles and Tim Sherwood. We had fun and won three-none, which is our biggest away win against "The Hammers" since a 6-1 in August 1962.
West Ham became the second team to lose three of their first four games of a season in the Premier League by a margin of three or more goals. The other side was Bournemouth in 2022-23.
Graham Potter was sacked at the end of September and Nuno was appointed. Nuno drew his first and then lost three consecutive games giving "The Hammers" their worst start to a season for 52 years, matching the 1973-74 and 1932-33 seasons.
West Ham lost their opening four home fixtures for the first time in their history (v Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal, Brentford). They've also lost all six of their London derby games so far.
Soucek's sending off in our 3-0 away win in September was West Ham's ninth Premier League red card against Spurs, two more than they have had against any other opponent.
One of those previous sendings off was Mohammed Kudus in last season's home game when he pushed Micky van de Ven in the face! Kudus had scored West Ham's opener, but by the time he was sent off we were already 4-1 up! The injured Kudus will not be playing his old team tomorrow (3pm kick-off).
Other Spurs absentees include Richarlison. In his press conference today (Thursday) Thomas Frank revealed that "Richie"'s hamstring sustained against Villa will keep him out for seven weeks. He joins Rodrigo Bentancur on the long-term injury list, already occupied by Kulusevski and Maddison (remember them playing?).
New signing Conor Gallagher is raring to go and is a probable starter. Yves Bissouma has returned from the African Cup of Nations and in Frank's words "...is available as well". Lucas Bergvall could be available. Both Solanke and Udogie are also available, but whether that means starts remains to be seen. The "second half" Spurs of last week's FA Cup defeat should be good enough to beat West Ham and I'll say by 3-1!
"The Hammers" do have a couple of new signings in the camp. Former Lazio striker Valentin "Taty" Castellanos looked quite lively against Forest and scored his first club goal in West Ham's FA Cup against QPR last week. 22-year-old Brazilian striker Pablo Felipe has had less game time so far. There are rumours that Paqueta might be going home to Flamengo. In his press conference, Nuno was vague and stated regarding the fitness of Konstantinos Mavropanos, Mateus Fernandes and Lucas Paqueta: "All of them are recovering. All of them are recovering with different things. Konstantinos has had a neck issue that has taken some time and is still painful. Matheus is back doing individual sessions and Luca is still on treatment so let's see. We still have a couple of days."
The British taxpayer will face a bill of a further £1.25million if West Ham United are relegated from the Premier League this season.
Under the terms of their 99-year lease for playing at the London Stadium, West Ham's present annual rent of £2.5million will be halved should the club drop into the Championship.
When the news broke in November regarding the passing of West Ham legend Billy Bonds, I saw plenty of comments by Spurs fans expressing their sympathy and admiration for such a stalwart servant of a rival club.
West Ham have a history of long serving players, and managers. As a player, Bonds followed Bobby Moore and preceded Mark Noble. Like Noble, Billy was never capped at senior level for England. He made a record 799 appearances as a player. Bonds captained "The Hammers" to their two FA Cup wins in 1975 and 1980 - one against a second division Fulham side featuring Bobby Moore and Alan Mullery. He was 41 years and 225 days old when he made his 663rd and last League appearance in the claret and blue. Bonds also coached the side between 1990 and 1994, following John Lyall and a short reign for Lou Macari, preceding Harry Redknapp.
In 2019 the East Stand at the London Stadium was renamed the Billy Bonds Stand.
Did you know? - I referred to "skating on thin ice" earlier in this preview. Jayne Torvill, who was made a Dame in the New Year's honours discovered in recent years that she is related to West Ham wartime captain Charlie Walker who won the War Cup in 1940. Walker was born in 1911 in Nottingham and made 121 appearances for West Ham between 1936 and 1940. He passed away in 1990.
Jarred Gillett becomes the referee we have seen most (so far) this season. This will be his fourth Spurs game of the season, three of which have been London derbies. Two of those have been wins for Spurs, both away - against Crystal Palace and West Ham!
