Spurs revert to type as two runs end

Leeds v Spurs - 07.11.26

All runs end sometime and for Spurs, two three-game runs ended today. They had won their last three successive Premier league games and also their last three games at Elland Road. The first half today was short on chances and entertainment.

Referee John Brooks and his VAR officials provided the main talking points, primarily over a four minute review over whether Leeds wing-back Jayden Bogle had committed serious foul play against Mathys Tel. Bogle had not even been booked for an incident similar to that which led to Crystal Palace's Mateta being sent off in our last game. The result of the review was "no serious foul play" and the referee was not even asked to view the incident. Tel was unable to continue and had to be replaced before the interval by Dominic Solanke, whose most significant touch was in defence after the break.

Roberto made one change with Pedro Porro starting and Solanke sitting on the bench. James Maddison was an unused sub. Daniel Farke made two changes to his team (who were without a win in five games). Sean Longstaff and Lukas Nmecha started for the first time this season while Daniel James and Harry Wilson were on the bench. Leeds also ended a long run of failing to win a game kicking off at 12.30.

VAR looked at a possible handball in the Spurs area by Fernandes, but the ball was deemed to have hit his shoulder "above the line." The first chance fell to Leeds after a free kick, but Tanaka fired wide - not for the last time. Leeds put Spurs under a little pressure and won a corner, but Kinsky punched that clear with confidence. Incidentally, 21-year-old Luca Gunter was our substitute keeper, and not Dubravka.

Leeds skipper Ethan Ampadu was also off target following a cross by Gudmundsson, who had the beating off Pedro Porro on the wing.

Referee John Brooks dished out early yellow cards to Micky van de Ven and Sean Longstaff. Mr Brooks is not shy with his cards (as referenced in my preview) and sent off two of our players in his last Spurs game when we lost to Liverpool last December.

A decent left-footed cross by Kudus was punched clear by Trafford, but neither keeper was properly tested in the first half. Tel was involved in a good approach down the left wing before crossing to Marmoush, whose shot was not too strong, took a half-block, and ran to the goalkeeper. Another shot by Kudus was easy for Trafford. Kudus had made a decent run after taking a short pass from Pedro Porro.

Spurs were gaining momentum and the home crowd was getting frustrated. We gained a cheap corner after Elvedi headed past his keeper. After a second corner, taken by Kudus, Marmoush headed wide at the back post.

The incident regarding Bogle's non punishment followed. He clearly made high contact with Tel's ankle. Irony nearly followed when Bogle got to the bye-line and crossed low, but Kinsky held Nmecha's header. At the other end, Kudus crossed twice from the right and Archie Gray just couldn't make contact with the second.

Farke made a half-time substitution with Bard replacing Gudmundsson. The home side had been properly geed up and dominated the second half. Spurs reverted to type and played with less and less confidence, passing and moving backwards when advance was required.

Micky van de Ven made a vital clearance before Ampadu had a shot blocked. Bogle crossed again and Van de Ven somehow got his foot under the ball to lift it over the bar and out for a corner. Solanke cleared a header by Calvert-Lewin. I don't recall a significant touch at the other end by our striker.

Pedro Porro was booked for a foul on Nmecha, that didn't look like a foul. It looked like a poor decision and that's when De Zerbi saw yellow.

Caalvert-Lewin had a great chance to score when he broke clear down the right channel. Spurs managed to hold him off, and the former Everton man chose to pass inside to Tanaka, who once again missed the target.

Pedro Porro fouled Nmecha again on the edge of the area but didn't see a second yellow. The free kick was from a dangerous position by Longstaff, but Kinsky confidently fisted the ball clear. Nmecha had another shot blocked. Ampadu's follow-up was deflected and Kinsky held the corner.

Wisely, Roberto's three substitutions included Gallagher for Pedro Porro, with Archie Gray reverting to right back. Kulusevski and Bentancur replaced Marmoush and Fernandes, respectively. Kudus switched to the left wing.

Gallagher hit our first shot of the second half just wide after a Kudus cross reached him outside the area. Calvert-Lewin had another chance after Spurs lost the ball, but that was thankfully off target. By this time, I was thinking I'd be more than happy to take a point.

Mr Brooks deemed that Kinsky took too long taking a goal kick and gave a corner. Bentancur blocked a Leeds shot. Longstaff had a good shot on target and Kinsky made a great save to tip the ball over the bar. The Spurs keeper (clearly our best player today) cleared another corner, hit too close to the keeper by Longstaff.

Daniel Farke made what turned out to a masterful double substitution with Wilson and Okafor replacing Tanaka and Nmecha. With almost their first touched following an Ampadu long throw, Wilson got a touch and passed inside to Okafor, who breezed past Bentancur and scored with a firm right-footed finish. Spurs begged for a handball offence by Wilson, but that was a no-go.

De Zerbi gave Luca Williams-Barnett another outing, but Spurs didn't let him see enough of the ball. As we entered added time, Robertson swung in a free kick from the left and our top league scorer van Hecke forced Trafford's one required save of the game, as he dived low to his left for the defender's header.

Tonali did give Williams-Barnett a chance in front of goal, but the 18-year-old couldn't quite make a shot. Luca crossed deep from the left and Bentancur's effort was a) saved and b) offside anyway.

Everyone agreed that Leeds were deserved winners. Spurs go back to the drawing board and will host Ipswich after the international break.
