An "L" of a game
Thanks to Greg Smith for the picture.
After a run of three consecutive Premier League wins (all over teams whose names begin with the letter "C"), and recent league form which includes just one defeat in our last seven games, Spurs can at last approach a game with more than a degree of confidence.
Spurs return to the ground where they won last October, and indeed where they have won their last three games against Leeds. We have beaten Leeds in five of our last six meetings and drawn the other game. We haven't lost to the Yorkshire team since May 2021. Why, for the second week running, we are starting a match above our opponents in the league table!
Leeds must be treated with respect though. They started the season well and were undefeated in their opening five games beating Forest away and thrashing Newcastle 4-1 at Elland Road. They are unbeaten at home in 9 games since 3rd March.
Manager Daniel Farke hasn't always had a smooth ride, but after his appointment by Leeds In July 2023, he won them promotion after two seasons and they are now in a second successive Premier League season of this spell.
Our first four wins of the season in all competitions have come against Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, Chelsea and Crystal Palace. We are the first top-division team whose opening four victories of a campaign have come against teams with the same initial since Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Southampton, twice, Stoke City and Sheffield Wednesday in August 1969. With no teams left whose name begins with C, we have to make a start on the "L"s.
This could be an "L" of a game! Last year Thomas Frank's Spurs won 2-1 with goals by Mathys Tel and Mo Kudus. It was Kudus's first Spurs goal and he upset the home fans with his traditional sitting down celebration in front of them! Tel scored again in the home game in early May, but he became the villain when he performed what turned out to be a reckless overhead clearance in his own area. Play continued, but ultimately VAR intervened and when referee Jarred Gillett was called to the monitor, the inevitable announcement of a penalty followed. Dominic Calvert-Lewin did not fail from the spot.
Memorable away wins here for Spurs include a 4-1 on the last day of the 22/23 season when Lucas Moura scored his sensational last Spurs goal. Harry Kane became the first player to score 30 or more goals in two Premier League seasons. Those too were Harry's last league goals for Spurs before his August move to Bayern Munich, for whom he has just signed a new three-year contract. "H" recently deservedly won the coveted Ballon d'Or.
Tomorrow's game kicks off at 12.30 pm (live on TNT), as did the February 2022 game when we won 4-0 at Elland Road. Kane also scored in that game. Harry and Son also combined for a record-breaking 37th time when Son scored the fourth goal. How we miss them both!
Rodrigo Bentancur will be available after serving his three-match suspension, but I don't expect him to start now that Fernandes and Tonali seem to have established themselves in front of the defence. This preview precedes Roberto de Zerbi's press conference.
Leeds were quite busy in the summer transfer window. Firstly, they signed Man City goalkeeper James Trafford. Trafford gained four senior England caps this year, including two recent Nations League games. He did make a bad error last week when playing out to give Bournemouth their first goal.
Harry Wilson, who has a penchant for spectacular goals, signed from Fulham after his contract expired. Defender Tarik Muharemovic signed from Sassuolo and has played every league game so far. He is a Bosnia-Herzegova international and played in the World Cup last summer, and replaces Pascal Struijk, who joined Brighton in June.
Another defensive signing was Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach, who has also been a regular starter. Front four player Noah Okafor has been described as aa major doubt for tomorrow's game, but Daniel Farke may be able to call upon Dom Calvert-Lewin, who suffered a recent foot injury and former Spur Joe Rodon, who suffered as hamstring injury in late August. Midfielder Anton Stach is also described as a major doubt.
My bold prediction is for Spurs to win 2-1! I expect the Spurs squad to be similar to that which featured against Palace last week.
Continuing our review of the 2016-17 season, 10 years ago on November 6th, we drew 1-1 at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium. Harry Kane equalised with a penalty kick.
John Brooks referees us for the first time this season and the 13th time in all. His only Spurs game in the middle last season was our home defeat to Liverpool when he sent off both Xavi and Romero. Romero was shown a second yellow card in the 93rd minute. Mr Brooks had charge of Everton's win at Newcastle on Monday night, when he showed 75th minute Newcastle substitute Jacob Ramsey two yellow cards. Brentford had two players sent off by this official when they lost at home to Liverpool on 17th October. Mr Brooks is a Leicester fan.
