Charlton will come to Tottenham full of confidence

Tomorrow night (7.45pm) we host Charlton in the Carabao Cup second round. Call it our punishment for not being in Europe if you like, but this game does give our squad a chance to experience a winning feeling before Saturday's first home league game against Newcastle. We certainly need to shake off the cobwebs, which were all too easily on display at Brentford in a dismal team performance.

Charlton have won all three games they've played so far. They comfortably beat Cheltenham away in the first round of this competition, then beat Derby at home and West Ham away on Saturday in The Championship. They'll be full of confidence coming to Tottenham.

Spurs have not met Charlton in a senior competitive game since 9th January, 2011. On that day, Michael Oliver refereed Spurs for the first time. Andros Townsend scored our opener on his senior debut and Spurs won 3-0. Mr. Oliver was our referee on Saturday at Brentford.

Charlton had spent seven seasons in the Premier League between 2000 and 2007, but had already been relegated to the third tier when we last met. "The Addicks" have spent 11 seasons in the third tier since their departure from the Premier League and 8 in the Championship. They were last promoted by way of a 1-0 play-off final win over Leyton Orient in May 2025, and finished 19th in last season's second tier table.

We have never previously met Charlton in the League Cup. Last year they were beaten 3-1 away to Cambridge United in the second round of the competition.

This will be only Spurs' third appearance at this stage in the last 20 years, due to our absence from European competition. Our last elimination at this stage was at Craven Cottage in August 2023, when we lost a penalty shoot-out. In 2009 we beat Doncaster 5-1 away. Let's hope for a convincing win tomorrow night! Remember, there is no extra-time in the event of a draw and these games are decided by a penalty shoot-out until the semi-final stage.

Charlton have twice reached the League Cup quarter-finals, in 2007 and 2023. Spurs, of course have won the competition four times. Their last Final win was in 2008. We have reached 9 finals, the last of which was defeat to Manchester City in 2021.

Charlton have been coached by Nathan Jones since February 2024. When he signed, "The Addicks" were struggling near the bottom of League One. In their last 16 games, they were unbeaten except in Jones' first and last games that season, by which time survival had bee assured. The following season Charlton were promoted via the play-offs. they survived in The Championship last season, despite a poor run-in.

Jones previously coached at Luton, and as a player was at Southend, Brighton and Yeovil.

22-year-old Tyreece Campbell (who has 8 senior caps for Jamaica) has scored a goal in each of Charlton's three games so far. 30-year-old Lloyd Jones has scored in both Championship games. Jones' career began 14 years ago in the Liverpool academy, but he never made a senior appearance for the Anfield side. Jones is a centre-back, who has been at Charlton since June 2023.

When we played that 2011 FA Cup game against Charlton in 2011, former Spurs Gary Doherty and Johnnie Jackson were in the Charlton team. Future Spur Scott Parker was in the Charlton side that faced us 2001. Scott was, until late last season, coaching at Burnley. Johnnie Jackson, who scored for us in a 4-2 League win at The Valley in 2004, coached Charlton in 2021 and 2022, but has since been in charge at Wimbledon.

Spurs have today announced the signing of Savinho from Manchester City. the player now wishes to be known as Savio, which is his given first name. Savio's registration is complete, so he could be involved tomorrow. Roberto de Zerbi has confirmed that Solanke is available to play. I expect him to start. Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro are also included in the squad, but are likely to start on the bench. Kudus remains unavailable and James Maddison sustained a "small injury" to his shoulder on Saturday.

RDZ also indicated that Luca Williams-Barnett will be on the bench. I would like to see Kevin Danso start and I suspect Ben Davies will a) be involved and b) captain the side. Of course we want to see a good win. I'll say 3-1 to Spurs.

Our match referee tomorrow will be Adam Herczeg, who was born in Durham. Mr Herczeg has never previously had charge of a Spurs game, but is a regular official at Championship level. Last season, he was in charge of Manchester City's 10-1 FA Cup win over Exeter.

This season, I plan to look back on the events of the 2016-17 season - ten years ago. It was a season in which we finished runners-up - our highest ever Premier League position. We scored more league goals than any other team (including Champions Chelsea), and conceded less than all other teams.

Harry Kane won the Golden Boot with 29 league goals. Dele Alli scored 18, and Son Heung-min added 14. Those three players scored 78 of our 117 in all competitions, which included an ultimately disappointing run in Europe, and a horrible FA Cup semi-final defeat, which was the seventh of eight sem-final exits since we last appeared in the Cup Final and won in 1991.

This was the last season we played at the old White Hart Lane stadium, culminating in the emotional "Finale."

In 2016, we were in the Champions League having finished third in the previous season. Therefore, we did not enter the League Cup until Round Three.
