Surely, this is a "must win" game for Spurs!
As we enter matchday seven of this Premier League season, three of the bottom five teams are competing in Europe and one of them - Bournemouth has yet to win a league game. Two of the promoted sides are in the top half of the table. Coventry - our opponents on Monday night at 8pm - have won two successive games and sit in 14th place.
Between them, the promoted sides have managed 7 wins. Spurs have yet to win, and if we fail to beat Coventry our hopes for the season will look grim indeed. This is surely a "must win" game for Spurs! Fulham won today (Saturday), so we will be starting Monday's game at the bottom of the league. That is so depressing.
Spurs have lost 22 games in front of their own fans during the past two
years, more than any other team in the division. We have won five of our past 36 matches at home in all competitions, and just one home league match in 2026.
We have also now failed to win in our opening six games of a league season for the fourth time: previously 1912-13 (League Division One), 1955-56 (League Division One) and 2008-09 (Premier League).
Coventry have surprised both Nottingham Forest (away) and Newcastle last Monday at home, and will arrive at Tottenham full of confidence. We must hope that Spurs have come back from their warm weather training in Spain raring to go!
Coached by Frank Lampard, Coventry confirmed their promotion and return to the Premier League with a 1-1 draw at Ewood Park on April 17th. Coventry's previous top flight season had been in 2000-01.
Over 7,000 Coventry fans made it to Ewood Park for the game.
Coventry confirmed their promotion as Championship winners with a 5-1 win over Portsmouth in their next game in front of a 31,000+ crowd.
Spurs' last league game against the "Sky Blues" was on 17th March 2001 when we won 3-0 at home with goals by Iversen, Ferdinand and Rebrov.
We have played Coventry 4 times since in cup competition and won all four games. The last of these was in September 2024 in the third round of the Carabao Cup when Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson scored late goals to see us through.
Mark Robins was sacked in November 2024 after seven and a half years in charge, during which time he led Coventry back to the Championship from the fourth tier, and to the 2024 FA Cup semi-final which they lost only on penalties to Manchester United. In 2023, Coventry had been pipped to promotion by Luton in the play-off final which also went down to penalties.
Frank Lampard was appointed later in November 2024. The "Sky Blues" were narrowly beaten by Sunderland in the 2025 play-off semi-finals.
As you can see, our overall Premier League record against the "Sky Blues" is not great. This season will see the 40th anniversary of a disastrous FA Cup Final defeat.
In the 1990s we lost four of our first five home games to Coventry. On 19th August 1992, we lost our first home Premier League game 2-0 to Coventry. The following season, they beat us 2-1 on New Year's Day.
In May 1995, Ron Atkinson was the manager when they beat us 3-1, and the following year on the last day of the season, Gordon Strachan's side avoided relegation by beating us 2-1. Dion Dublin scored in both the 1995 and 1996 games. 18-year-old Paul McVeigh scored his only Spurs goal in his third appearance.
McVeigh had been compared to Jimmy Greaves as a young player, but spent most of his career at Norwich. After football, McVeigh forged a career as a motivational speaker.
James Maddison's career began at Coventry, where he was born. After two seasons playing in League One, James moved to Norwich in 2016, and was signed by Leicester in June 2018. He made 163 league appearances for "The Foxes", scoring 43 goals. "Madders" made the first three of his seven England appearances while at Leicester before signing for Spurs in late June 2023. He's made 66 Premier League appearances for Spurs, scoring 13 goals. James' last Spurs goal came in our 3-1 Europa League win at home against Bodo/Glimt on May 1st 2025, which was also the last time he started a competitive game for the club.
I understand Roberto de Zerbi's press conference will not be held until tomorrow (Sunday). We know that we must manage without Bentancur for our next three games after his red card at Old Trafford. Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski are getting ever closer to their return. Maybe we will see "Deki" on the bench on Monday night. De Zerbi's main problem is who to leave out, but any permutation leaves us short of goal power, which is a constant worry. In my opinion, it's a great shame that the manager left Richarlison our of his squad.
Coventry made 11 signings in the summer. These included midfielder Frank Onyeka and defender Ethan Pinnock, both from Brentford. Both have played a big part in the season so far. Winger Loum Tchaouna arrived from relegated Burnley and Eintracht Frankfurt defender Aurele Amenda came in a deal worth more than £17m. Midfielder Gustavo Hamer was re-signed from Sheffield United and Taiwo Awoniyi came from Nottingham Forest.
I've seen a stat today that puts Savio on top of a list including Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe regarding the most successful dribbles so far this season. Mikey Moore is in the list at 4th=. We must hope for more end product on Monday and a first league win of the season for Spurs.
This will be Andy Madley's second game in charge of Spurs this season, after he officiated in our league cup defeat at Anfield. It will be Mr. Madley's 14th game in charge of Spurs, having first refereed our 1-0 away win against West Brom in November 2020.
Continuing our review of the 2016-17 season, on Saturday October 15th, 2016 we drew with West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns. Former Spur Nacer Chadli gave the home side an 82nd minute lead and we were grateful for Dele Alli's third goal of the season in the 89th minute. On the following Tuesday we drew 0-0 away to Bayer Leverkusen in our third Champions League group game. In a tight group E, we were second - one point behind Monaco.
Did you know? - Coventry were ever-present in the top division from 1967 to 2001.
