Oh for a goal (or two) and a win!

For all their transfer window woes, Everton (unlike Spurs) are unbeaten so far this season, and sit ten places above us in the table. They've scored 9 goals in their four games so far, four of which were at Preston in the League Cup. Their one remaining recognised striker - Thierno Barry - has scored four of "The Toffees"' goals, three of which were against Preston.

Spurs put five goals past Charlton, but have yet to score or win in the Premier League. Everton are our favourite opponent in the Premier League, and this, surely, is the perfect opportunity for us to score a goal or two and get on the winning track!

One player likely to face us is Brennan Johnson, who scored our winning goal in last year's Europa League Final. Since then, Brennan spent eight months at Crystal Palace (without scoring), and has now signed for Everton in a move which took Dwight McNeil in the other direction. Brennan did manage a goal in Everton's win at Preston.

Jack Grealish turned 31 yesterday (Thursday), and has once again signed on loan from Man City. Grealish was impactive for Everton last season until being struck down by injury in January.

Monaco's Folarin Balogun (subject of controversy in the World Cup when his suspension after a red card was rescinded) was all set to sign on deadline day, but apparently abandoned his medical at Finch Park. A proposed move by Spurs to send Richarlison back to Merseyside fell through, as did our offer for Ndiaye, who has gone to Man City.

Incidentally, at the time of writing, Richarlison is in limbo after being omitted from Roberto's Premier League squad. "Richie" is said to be investigating the possibility of terminating his contract (which has one year to run), thus enabling a move.

Everton have signed midfielder Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough, Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Arsenal (who scored Everton's late equaliser last week against Man Utd), and they also have 32-year-old Christian Norgaard (injured)from Arsenal. 20-year-old Tyrique George was on loan last season but has now signed full terms in a move from Chelsea. George also scored against United last week.

News emerged this week that one of our deadline day arrivals - Mykhailo Mudryk - suffered an ankle injury in training and will be out for up to two months. We saw him for 17 minutes last week!

I am posting this preview before the press conference, but I do not expect any radical team news. If selected, Andy Robertson can expect a hot welcome from the travelling fans as opposed to the favourable reception he can expect at Anfield on Tuesday!

Last season's last day win gave us a league double over Everton for the first time since 2017-18. We have performed the feat 9 times in all in 34 Premier League seasons. Everton failed to win any of their last seven games last season.

Our first two doubles over "The Toffees" were in the first two seasons of the Premier League. Our 2-1 win on 5th September, 1992 came in our seventh game of the season, and was only our second win of that season. Peter Beardsley opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half before Paul Allen equalised and 17-year-old Andy Turner scored a dramatic last minute winner in his first season, and his fourth game. It was his very first senior goal.

We played Everton at home on the last day of the 2018/19 season on 12th May. On that occasion, we drew 2-2. Three weeks later we played Liverpool in the Champion League final.

Since 1956 Everton have finished in the bottom eight of the table 33 times yet have always avoided relegation in that time.

We have lost just two of our last 27 league games against "The Toffees." Everton have managed just one win in their last 17 visits to play Spurs in the league.

Jordan Pickford now has 91 England caps, the first of which was won in November 2017. Jordan got a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against Germany in his first game. Peter Shilton, with a record 125 caps, is the only man to have played more times in goal for England. Only 15 players have more England caps than Pickford. That includes Harry Kane, currently on 121.

Five English teams have been in Champions League action this week and three more are in Europa League action next week. Brighton have to wait till next month for their first Europa Conference League game. Spurs have to miss European involvement this season, but 10 years ago on September 14th, we did play Champions League football. Because our new stadium construction had begun, European (not domestic) games were consigned to Wembley. 85,011 people saw us lose our first Group E game 2-1 to Monaco. Bernardo Silva (who joined Manchester City in 2017) opened the scoring and Thomas Lemar added a second goal before Toby Alderweireld got one back for us in the 45th minute when he headed home a Lamela corner.

Darren England referees us for the tenth time tomorrow (5.30pm - SKY). His only Spurs game last season was our 3-2 defeat Bournemouth in January, when we succumbed to a late Semenyo goal. That was Semenyo's farewell to "The Cherries" before his move to Manchester City. Mr. England refereed another 3-2 defeat when we lost in our last visit to Goodison Park in January 2025. One of "The Toffees"' scorers in that game was Ilimane Ndiaye, who also now plays for City.

My optimistic prediction is for a 2-0 home win. Here's hoping! I look forward to the day when I can once again make confident forecasts.
