Settle down now Spurs!

The transfer window has closed here in England and (apart from the possible sale of Richarlison to Trabzonspor in Turkey), Spurs can hopefully settle down after the numerous comings and goings of this summer. The latest of those was the surprising acquisitions of Mykhailo Mudryk and Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea this week.

Roberto de Zerbi finalised the official squad which was announced yesterday, and excluded Richarlison. I must admit I had to look up the name of goalkeeper Jacob Knightbridge, who has been included in the squad of 25 as one of our 8 required "home-grown" players, as has Tosin, who replaced the departed Kevin Danso. Knightbridge arrived last week and will play with the U-21s.

Forest have rung the changes too. They had four manager/coaches last season, and we lost 3-0 to two of them - Sean Dyche and Vitor Pereira. Pereira was the last to feel the weight of owner Mr. Marinakis's axe, as he departed at the end of June. Former Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner was appointed on 6th July.

Last season, Forest lost their Europa League semi-final 4-1 on aggregate to Aston Villa, and finished just above Spurs in 16th place. Mr. Marinakis is no doubt hoping that Glasner can lead his side to glory, as he did in two seasons with Palace, who compete in this season's Europa League.

The first blow to Forest's new manager was the loss of England midfielder Elliot Anderson for a princely £116m to Man City. In fairness, this deal had been agreed before Glasner's official appointment date.

Among the other departures from Forest were striker Taiwo Awoniyi (to Coventry), and forward Omari Hutchinson (to AC Milan). Notable arrivals have been Liam Delap from Chelsea, Ousmane Diomande from Sporting Lisbon, and Glasner's former player Daniel Munoz from Crystal Palace.

Nottingham Forest's first two games of the season were at home to Leeds. They lost 1-0 in the league and 2-0 in the Carabao Cup. It was the first time since 1965 that 2 top-flight teams have met in both the opening 2 games of a season. Last week Forest twice led Liverpool at Anfield, but they were pegged back by another Munoz (Victor), who scored his first Liverpool goal.

Forest have won four consecutive league games against Spurs for the first time since March 1997.

They won a second consecutive league double against us last season, after we had achieved that feat in Forest's first two seasons back in the Premier League. Forest also achieved consecutive doubles against Spurs in the 95-96 and 96-97 seasons.

Last season they became the third bottom four side to beat Spurs by three goals at Tottenham after Sheffield Wednesday (1998) and West Ham (2013). Both Forest's wins last season against us were 3-0.

Spurs have picked up only 60 points in 66 Premier League games since winning 4-0 away to the defending champions Manchester City in November 2024. Forest are just one of eight teams outside the "big six" who have beaten our tally.

The team news is in, and it looks good! Roberto has said that Maddison has just returned to training but all other players are available. That would appear to include Dejan Kulusevski who has had a long, hard road to recovery from his May 2025 injury and associated setbacks. Tomorrow's team and squad selection will be interesting. Could we see:- Kinsky, Pedro Porro, Van Hecke, Van de Ven, Robertson; Gray, Tonali, Fernandes; Savio, Solanke, Marmoush?

It's going to be a tough game tomorrow (3pm kick-off). Both teams are in desperate need of a win to kick-start their season, and with home advantage, Forest are probably favourites to win. However, I'm sticking my neck out to predict a 2-1 away victory! Roberto has said that Mudryk is ready to play a part.

Our match referee (for the 38th time) will be Craig Pawson. Openly averse to Spurs (he once visibly expressed disappointment as fourth official when we scored a late winner at Man City), Mr. Pawson last refereed this fixture on Boxing Day 2024, when we lost 1-0 to an Anthony Elanga goal. Mr Pawson's first game in charge of Spurs was at Norwich 2014, when we also lost 1-0. Peter Bankes, who was our referee last week is on V.A.R. duty tomorrow.

10 years ago, our fourth league game was away to Stoke. We won 4-0, with goals by Son (2), Dele Alli, and Harry Kane. Ben Davies was our left back. You can read more statistics related to this game in the relevant Premier League review.

Did you know? (1) - Eddie Baily, who is best known as Bill Nicholson's long serving assistant manager spent just over two years playing for Forest between October 1956 and December 1958. Eddie made 325 appearances for Spurs and was part of our squad which was promoted in 1950 and won the Division One title in 1951. Eddie spent the first part of 1956 at Port Vale, and had scored for Port Vale against Forest in September 1956 in Division Two. Forest were promoted in 1957 and beat Spurs 4-3 at White Hart Lane that year in October, with Eddie in the side. Eddie finished his playing career with Leyton Orient.

Did you know? (2) - Jeff Whitefoot, who died in July, 2024 aged 90 was the penultimate surviving original "Busby Babe". Whitefoot left United and played for Grimsby in the 19557/8 season, before signing for Forest in July 1958. He played in Forest's last FA Cup Final win against Luton in 1959. Forest's first scorer was Roy Dwight - Elton John's uncle! Dwight was carried off with a broken leg in the first half, but Forest still won 2-1. One of Jeff's post-retirement roles was running a pub in Oakham, Rutland.
