Defoe's scoring record against West Ham
Jermain Defoe was Spurs Odyssey voters' clear choice for man of the match after the 3-1 win over his old team, West Ham. Jermain scored his 6th and 7th Premier League goals of the season, and his 9th and 10th of the season in all competitions. It's the fourth time this season that Jermain has won the MOTM vote, and of course he scored in all the games when he received the accolade.
Those games were at Newcastle on the first day of the season, when Defoe scored once, but we lost. On the other three occasions we won 3-1 against Reading, Maribor, and West Ham. Jermain scored twice at Reading and got a hat-trick against Maribor in the Europa League. Long may his scoring form continue this season!
Jermain's two goals put him behind only Suarez (10), Ba and Van Persie (9) in this season's Premier League score chart after 13 games.
Because of West Ham's occasional absences from the top flight in recent years, JD has not been able to play against them as often as he might. He first scored against them in the "Lasagne-Gate" game of May 2006, and the following year, in the face of the usual abuse, he scored from the penalty spot in the dramatic 4-3 win at Upton Park. Defoe scored against us, and not West Ham in his brief spell away from the club at Portsmouth, and then resumed his scoring ways for Spurs against West Ham in a 2-1 win in August, 2009. he also scored in the home win that season. We didn't score at all against the Hammers in their last Premier League season, so all in all, Jermain has scored 6 goals for Spurs against his old team.
Altogether, Defoe has now amassed 131 Premier League goals in 365 Premier League games for West Ham, Portsmouth and Tottenham. 86 of those goals have come in 241 league appearances (including substitutions) for Spurs in his two spells. As reported in Sunday's match report, he has scored 128 goals for us in all competitions. Jermain is on target to become our top Premier League goalscorer, with just Robbie Keane (91) and Teddy Sheringham (97) to beat.
Jermain recently overtook Teddy Sheringham to take eighth place in the all-time spurs goalscorers' list in all competitions, and is now just five goals behind Alan Gilzean, who was Paul Coyte's half-time guest on Sunday. With Len Duquemin on 134, and George Hunt on 138, the top four is in sight for Jermain, but he has quite a way to go to emulate Cliff Jones in fourth place on 159 goals.
