Time to take stock
Now we've reached the end of January (my review of the month will follow), and with 15 Premier League games to play, it's worth taking stock of our position compared to last year, and in relation to a potential top four position.
The 3-0 win at The Hawthorns took us to 40 points, but that is three points less than we had last year after 23 games. We are also one point worse off than we were last season, after playing the same games. (See the Spurs Odyssey Like for Like table)
We are, however, in a better position than last year when we consider our chances of finishing in the top four. We are within three points of Manchester United, who are in third place, whereas last year, we were three points off fourth place and seven away from third.
Clearly, there is all to play for in the coming weeks, and remaining four months of the season. (Our last Premier League game of 2014-15 is on May 24th at Goddison Park). However, our next two games, at home to Arsenal, and away to Liverpool will tell us more about our chances of attaining top four.
Saturday's win at West Brom was our sixth, and best away win of the season. At the same stage last year we had already won 8 away games.
Christian Eriksen scored his third goal in two games (two of them superb free kicks), and Harry Kane scored twice to take his tally in all competitions to 20. Kane is arguably our best signing of the transfer window, having been rewarded with a new five and a half year contract. Good luck to him!
Eriksen and Kane both scored over 8 out of 10, and were the focus of almost all the plaudits from the media. However, once again, it was Hugo Lloris, making world class saves almost every time he plays, who won the man of the match vote, with his seventh score of 8 or more (8.5) so far this season. Thanks Hugo!
