Basking in the Glory!
We Spurs fans are communally basking in the glory of a magnificent win; a magnificent team and coaching performance, and the praise being heaped upon our team by press and pundits in unison! Praise was also graciously given by Manchester City's coach Pep Guardiola, who after all knows a bit about football and winning at the very highest club level! On the one hand it was a great win to take into the International break, but on the other, it is frustrating to have to wait until a week on Saturday to see our beloved team in action again.
Those Spurs fans who only see their team in the flesh at home games have to endure even more frustration because our next home game is on 29th October against Premier League Champions Leicester. Before that we face 4 consecutive away games at West Brom, Bayer Leverkusen, Bournemouth and Liverpool. Those games are in three different competitions.
You don't need me to tell you this was our best team performance of the season so far, and this is reflected in the high grades given to the players and coach alike. No less than seven of our players were given grades of over 8 out of 10, with Vincent Wanyama taking your man of the match award. In these terms, this was our best performance since the 4-0 away win at Stoke in April.
It has been one of those weeks when it has been a real pleasure reading the comments of some of the 250+ voters in the spursometer survey. Here are just a few:-
"Excellent 1st half, kept our discipline 2nd half, Pochettino got selection and tactics right"
"Magnificent performance from start to finish. Best squad I have ever seen at Spurs."
"Great TEAM performance"
".....This was perfect team performance as you could not pick a clear MOTM....."
"Getting dizzy with all these high marks"
"MoPo won us the game by 'dropping' Janssen allowing us to pick a highly mobile midfield & frontline."
"Am in seventh heaven, bragging rights are mine"
Referee Andre Marriner drew more comments than occurs most weeks, and most were not positive, suggesting that both Otamendi and Sterling should have walked. It is only right that I should mention there were correspondents who saw some good in the officials.
In conclusion, we Spurs fans know that true Glory comes with silverware. We are contenders for the Premier League title at a very early stage of the season. May that status continue to the very end, and may Mauricio Pochettino and his team live up to those famous words of Danny Blanchflower - "The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It's nothing of the kind. The game is about glory. It is about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out to beat the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom."
COME ON YOU SPURS!
