Great weekend could have been even better for Spurs!
Until Manchester United came back from 2-0 down to beat Crystal Palace 3-2 at Selhurst Park last night it looked like being the finest weekend possible for Spurs! We had done our job comfortably on Saturday at home to Huddersfield, but then Sunday was a great day for us as Chris Hughton's Brighton beat Arsenal 2-1 and boring, unambitious Chelsea lost at Man City. When another Spurs connection - Andros Townsend - put Palace one up, it looked as if if might be a great Monday night for Spurs!
Palace played well, I thought, but inevitably flagged as Jose Mourinho made attacking substitutions and Nemanja Matic scored a stunning curling shot from 25 yards in added time to seal a United win. Matic's goal was his first for United, and similar to that which sealed Chelsea's 4-2 win against us in last year's FA Cup semi-final.
United regained second place, and are four points above us, when we had hoped it would be a gap of just one. Liverpool are two points above us, and we are closer to second and third than we are to fifth-placed Chelsea. Long may that situation continue! With United hosting Liverpool on Saturday, one or both will lose points, so we can gain ground again if we beat Bournemouth away on Sunday. Despite the supremacy of Man City at the top, another exciting end to the season is on the cards for Spurs.
The best gag I read or heard this weekend was "It's freezing cold in North London - minus 13!" which was a super-cool reference to the 13 point gap we have over Arsenal who have lost four consecutive games (in all competitions) for the first time since 2002. Wenger and his men currently provide us with good cheer week-in, week-out. Add to that a second consecutive 4-1 defeat for West Ham and in truth, the weekend really could not have been much better for our beloved and mighty Spurs. Long may these good times continue!
Two-goal Son Heung-min was inevitably your man of the match on Saturday, and you can see the spursometer in full here.
