The message is "Job done" !
Although we still have work to do in Sunday's game at home to Leicester to confirm third place, essentially the message after Wednesday night's win against Newcastle is "Job Done"! A much prized top four place is assured, as is the status of truly being the top team in London for the first time since 1994-95.
Once this season is done and dusted we will sweep aside the dip in form we have witnessed and endured in recent games amnd cherish the fact that Champions League football will be played in our brand spanking new stadium, where it has been confirmed a "test event" will take place in August. That will be ticketed, and there must now be a chance that we will even see an early season home game at "New White Hart Lane". Naming rights for the new stadium have yet to be announced.
We already knew we would finish above Arsenal for the second consecutive season. Last year the gap was 11 points. This year it is currently 14 points with one game remaining. We haven't finished more than 11 points above the Gooners since our Double season (15 points), but there were also gaps of 10 and 11 points in the 60s, which pre-dated the three points for a win days.
This week has been a mop up week for a lot of games which had been postponed due to FA Cup commitments, so 13 teams have played twice. Virtually all of the issues have been resolved, except for confirmation of third and fourth place, and the final relegation place. Swansea are almost certain to join West Brom and Stoke in The Championship, barring a 10 point turnaround in their goal difference compared to that of Southampton. "The Saints" host Manchester City, so "The Swans" can at least live in faint hope.
Manchester City have already gathered a Premier League record of 97 points and could hit 100 with a win on Sunday.
West Brom's win over Spurs means that their only three home Premier League wins over us have been in seasons in which they were relegated. They aso managed to take four points off Spurs this season. Incidentally, Darren Moore won the Premier League's April manager of the month award.
There's an irony in the fact you voted Toby Alderweireld our best player on Saturday. He's also our third best player of the season so far! However, Toby was only substitute for the Newcastle game, but he did get a massive cheer when he replaced the injured Kieran Trippier.
The top four Premier League teams all failed to score last weekend and with the exception of Manchester City they all lost 1-0.
Manchester United confirmed their second place with a bore draw at The London Stadium last night where the most excitement was Mark Noble losing his rag with Pogba, but somehow getting away with a booking.
Harry Kane's winner against Newcastle was his 106th Premier league goal and his 138th club goal, putting him sixth equal in our all-time list next to George Hunt. It was also Harry's 39th goal of this season, making him the fourth highest scorer of club goals in a season behind only Clive Allen, Jimmy Greaves and Martin Chivers. Harry has just overtaken Bobby Smith in that list.
Hugo Lloris was your man of the match against Newcastle, who became our sixth and last "double" victims of the season.
Let's hope we have some fun on Sunday!
