Premier League Review - Matchday 38
Sunday 28th May, 2023
(all matches kicked off at 4.30pm)
Arsenal 5-0 Wolves
Arsenal have finished with their highest points tally since they won the league in 2003-04.
Aston Villa 2-1 Brighton (SKY)
Aston Villa will play European football for the first time since 2010. Brighton had already secured their very first place in Europe and will enter the Europa League.
Villa had finished sixth in 2009-10 but didn t make it past the play-off round of the Europa League and finished the following season in the bottom half.
Brentford 1-0 Manchester City
Brentford just missed out on a European place but became the only team to achieve a league double over City this season. Only Chelsea and Spurs have previously achieved this feat in a season where City won the Premier League title.
Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle
Chelsea, with Frank Lampard s second spell in charge coming to an unsuccessful conclusion, finished 12th, their lowest position since 1993-4. Mauricio Pochettino reportedly signed his contract earlier and was formally announced as the new manager on Monday 29th May. His appointment (which commences on 1st July) will add spice to next season s meetings with Spurs.
Crystal Palace 1-1 Nottingham Forest
Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi came good in the last four games, none of which were lost, when he scored six of his ten Premier League goals for the season.
Palace manager Roy Hodgson, who will probably retire again had never previously faced a Forest team in all his years of management.
Everton 1-0 Bournemouth (SKY)
Everton have had too many last day close calls in the Premier League but Abdoulaye Doucoure s fifth goal for Sean Dyche was enough to preserve their 69-year stay in the top flight. Four of Dyche s five wins have been by the solitary goal of the game. The other was the freakish 5-1 at Brighton.
Leeds 1-4 Spurs (BT SPORT)
Spurs will not play in Europe for the first time in 13 years - when they failed to qualify at the end of the 2008-09 season.
Harry Kane scored 12 goals in our last 12 games, failing to score in just two of those games. Another record he achieved was to have scored more last day goals than any other Premier League player. That goes for Boxing Day too. 112 of Harry's 213 Premier League goals have been scored away from home.
Amazingly, Harry's last Premier League hat-trick was against Southampton on Boxing Day 2017, although he has scored two hat-tricks in European games since, along with five for England!
Harry's current figures also include the following:-
213 Premier League goals in 317 Premier League appearances for Spurs. He is the second highest Premier League scorer - 47 behind Alan Shearer's 260 goal record.
280 club goals in 435 appearances. He became our all-time top scorer when he scored against Manchester City in February, is tenth in our list of all-time club appearances, and second behind only Hugo Lloris in terms of Premier League club appearances.
Harry has scored 51 London derby goals - more than any other player.
Harry scored ten headed goals this season which is a Premier League record. He also scored in 26 different Premier League matches this season - the most ever in a 38-match season and even more than Golden Boot winner Erling Haaland, who scored 36 goals. Harry's total was 30, which made him the first player to score 30 or more goals twice in a 38-game Premier League season.
Harry's total of 76 European appearances for Spurs is more than any other player. Sadly, he will not be able to increase on that figure next season.
Harry also became England's all-time goalscorer this season and will certainly increase his current total of 55 goals in 82 appearances.
It remains to be seen whether the marvellous Harry Kane will be with Spurs next season to increase his record numbers with the club.
Harry Kane was, of course, our player of the season and was head and shoulders above any of his team-mates.
Leicester 2-1 West Ham (SKY)
Until Everton scored in the 57th minute Leicester had hopes of last-day survival, but the 2015-6 champions and 2021 FA Cup winners returned to the Championship whence they came in 2014. Their fans won t be such happy clappers next season.
When they were relegated in 2004, Leicester also accompanied Leeds in their drop.
West Ham have a Europa Conference League final to contemplate. A win against Fiorentina on June 7th would give them a Europa League place, and European football for a third consecutive season.
Manchester Utd 2-1 Fulham
Southampton 4-4 Liverpool
In an end of season gala game, relegated Southampton scored four goals for the first time since January 2022. They had been two goals down but came back to lead 4-2 before Liverpool secured a share of the points.
Liverpool will not play Champions League football next season for the first time since 2016-17.
